I couldn't imagine thinking about anything but that kiss in the back room. Like a radio constantly playing in the back of my mind, the only song was Jamie's lips.

The sound of the wind whistling and beating against the front windows of the cafe intensified the deep feelings of dread sitting on the top of my belly. I was back at work, alone, finishing up the last bits of paperwork for the day. It was an intense storm, and I had allowed no one else to come into work that day. The fear of getting trapped in the store was building up at the back of my spine.

I locked the doors an hour before normal closing time and called Marley to let her know I'd be heading home. Storms like this only happen once in a blue moon, but when they do hit, the snow can pile up high enough to prevent people from opening their front doors. I flicked off the "open" sign and held my breath as I opened the door to go outside into the blizzard.

Even in normal circumstances, I had little faith in my little old car. I did all the regular maintenance, made sure I had decent snow tires, and never left home with a tank less than half full. I even bought the new damn battery. The air outside slapped my face and whipped my hair around in circles around my head while I blindly fumbled with my keys. Tiny clumps of snow collected and melted on the exposed parts of my skin while I struggled against the wind until I finally got the door open and into the car.

When I turned my key into the ignition, nothing happened. Not a croak, no rumbling of an engine unwilling to start in the bitter cold, not even a click or two to tell me the spark plug had worn out. If it wasn't one thing, it was the other. I groaned.

I tried again, gently patting the dashboard and trying to coax my car to turn on with loving words of affirmation. "Come on baby, you can do it. Let's just get mama home!" I sang, hoping I could persuade my car into compliance with a little lovin'. Silence. You have got to be fucking kidding me.

I could have called a cab. I might have even been able to get on a bus. I could have even taken a cab to the bus station and got my ass on a bus, getting someone to help me with my car once the weather wasn't so angry. But I did none of those things. My heart and mind were still swimming with curiosity and confusion over my last kiss from Jamie. I had no interest in taking alternate transportation methods home, but I wanted to have a good reason to call Jamie. An even better one to see him.

"Hey you," he answered when he picked up the phone. I could hear the smile in his voice.

"Hey Jamie. How are you?" I responded, careful not to turn myself into a damsel in distress.

"Oh, you know, watching old movies. Riding out the storm at home."

"Smart, probably not super safe out there."

"Yeah, so what are you up to, then?" he said, still audibly smiling.

"Actually, that's why I called," I started.

"Oh?" his tone changed to curiosity and caution.

"Yeah, um. So I'm sitting in my car outside of work and it won't turn on." I offered no more information.

"Oh shit, Steves. I don't really know a lot about cars, what's going on?" he offered.

"Actually... I'm just wondering... if you're not busy... since you live just around the corner from work... I could just walk over and wait it out?" I stammered.
