I stood on the sidewalk across the road from my apartment building, listening to the trickle of melted snow flowing toward the storm drain, and took a deep inhale of the sweet smell of spring approaching. I pulled my hood over my head to combat the wind whipping my hair around my face.

I waited for Jamie to pick me up, like a small child waiting for the school bus. I kicked a small pebble and rolled it back and forth under my foot while I waited.

I could hear his car before I saw it. Jamie habitually listened to his music at full volume in the car, which necessitated me waiting for him across the street and not at my apartment. My neighbours were not forgiving people.

He pulled up in front of me and leaned over the passenger seat to open my door, a big goofy smile plastered on his face. I climbed into the seat and before I could even finish getting my seatbelt on, he grabbed my face in his hands and kissed me gently. I could feel the curve of a smile on his lips as we kissed, and it gave me tingles.

Work was getting more awkward and embarrassing. It felt like walking on eggshells battling the feeling of wanting to separate my work life from my love life and the feeling of wanting to jump his bones again in the back room. I had no choice but to draw a boundary to protect my job. I made it clear to Jamie that I didn't want anyone to be privy to what was going on between us. Mostly because I had no real understanding of what was going on between us. I hadn't asked him where we stood, and he hadn't asked me to be his girlfriend. Ever since the text ambush from Amber, I was second guessing every moment of time with him.

Inside his apartment was a warm respite from the biting air outside. Jamie had a knack for making his space cozy, which was one thing I liked so much about him. He seemed like he was so laid back and cool about everything. It was nice to be around someone who didn't feel so rigid about every decision they made. He was a "go with the flow" kind of guy, and the mismatched afghans and eclectic decor of his apartment reflected that.

I collapsed into the puff of his couch and stretched like a cat.

"God, I'm tired." I yawned.

"Oh no, don't say that." He said, shuffling through the drawer in his coffee table. "We have plans tonight."

I bolted upright and eyed him carefully.

"Don't we have plans every night?" I smiled coyly, running my fingers through his hair.

"We can do that too," He smirked, "but I actually invited my buddy over to play cards. Cards first, then I can ravage you, as planned."

I gulped back my surprise. I knew Jamie was well-liked, popular, even, but I had yet to meet anyone from his social circle. I froze in a mix of excitement and terror.

How would he introduce me to them? Would he call me his girlfriend? Were they friends with Amber, too? How could I compete with her?

"Oh, okay. Sounds fun," I said, coolly.

Jamie got busy in the kitchen making a pitcher of something alcoholic and asked me to help set up the tiny kitchen table for a card game. Ironically, his 'kitchen table' was actually a card table he'd plunked in the empty space of his dining room. We put out a nice spread of munchies and booze.
