(Jamie) Hey bestie.(Me) Well hello there
(Jamie) Going for a walk. Wanna join?
(Me) Jame it is freezing, dark, and I don't do walks.
(Jamie) Thought we had an appointment?
(Jamie) I have a really cool spot I want to show you. I'll pick you up in 10. Dress warm.
(Me) I thought we talked about daylight!
(Jamie) Told you. Vampire. Be there in 8.
It had been two days of radio silence. I assumed he was wrapping things up with Amber or that he had made plans with his family. Before, I could even pull my puffy boots over my wool socks. I heard Jamie's horn honking from the parking lot of my apartment building. Quickly, I pulled on my heavy black ski jacket and my read toque with the pom-pom on the top. I flew down the stairs, too impatient to wait for the elevator, and nearly crashed my body into the passenger seat of his car, totally winded.
"Never honk your horn in this parking lot again!" I said breathlessly, with a sarcastic smile. "My neighbors are not nice people. Very sketchy. A text would be fine."
Jamie shrugged his shoulders and smiled while I fumbled to get myself in his car.
"Cute mitts," he said, gently pulling at the thumb of my mitten. My heart leapt at the sensation of his hand on mine. I'd only been with him for exactly five seconds and he was already finding a reason to touch me.
"Thank you," I blushed. "They're made of an old wool sweater and lined with fleece. They're super warm!"
Jamie took his pointer finger and inserted it into the palm of my glove, wiggling it around on the inside of my hand.
"They feel cozy," he said. I sat quietly, bewildered at his ability to act so casually about it. I blinked, trying to decide what to say. He drew lines in the sand. I was being good about following them, but still the feeling of his skin against mine made my heart ache.
"So," I said, pulling on my seat belt. "Where is this magical place that you know of that we just have to take a walk to at 9pm".
Jamie pointed his chin up and smiled brightly, the warmth stretching across his entire face.
"Hey now. It is magical. Just wait till you see." He said and peeled out of the parking lot.
It didn't take long for me to adjust; Jamie's car was already warm when I got in. We drove for probably twenty minutes before we were out of town. The sky was clear and the full moon filled the road in front of us with light, despite there being no street lamps. We chatted idly while we drove, discussing work, music, books. Nothing too heavy. It was bliss.
Shortly after, Jamie pulled down a quiet dirt road, lined with tall trees and dead brush covered in heaps of snow. The gravel road was unassumed and though it had never gotten plowed, the snow was compact and hard beneath his tires as others had obviously driven down it before. The sound of the crunching snow and dirt groaned beneath Jamie's crappy old car, but he seemed so steady and sure at the wheel that it never occurred to me to feel unsafe. Finally, after slowly crawling through the tunnel of trees, we arrived at what looked like some sort of dirt parking lot. Jamie whipped the car into park and turned off the ignition.
