Leonard hadn't been at the academy two months when he was faced with the smartest and yet dumbest cadet he had ever met. The younger man had come in caked in dirt, bleeding from his head, and possibly had a broken arm. Apparently some sort of training accident. Yet the kid was grinning ear to ear, apparently having won despite his arm. He couldn't quite place it but the kid looked familiar.

Leonard sighed at the sight, he was too tired for this, "What's your name kid?" He asked.

"James T. Kirk." The kid said.

"So I do know you." Leonard began scanning his arm to see if it was really broken or not, "Leonard McCoy. I gave you your classification when I was finishing med school."

"I think I remember that." Jim smiled.

"Well, kid, you broke your arm." "I can set the bone and give you a hypo, you'll be all set in a few days, but you can't be using it until I clear you. Come back in three days and I'll check on you again."

Jim chuckled, "Make it two. I've got a sparring tournament to win."

"Make it two, and I'll put you on bed rest for a week." Leonard rolled his eyes, "No sparring until you're cleared. Come back in three days."

That was far from the last time Leonard had Jim Kirk showing up in the med bay with an injury, soon after came the allergic reactions. He was a smart kid, one of the top students in his class. But he was an idiot, he would rather fight with a broken leg than admit defeat, even in training. He didn't think before he acted, always getting himself into trouble, eating strange alien foods without having them examined for one of his many allergies.

Kirks parents both worked for Starfleet, occasionally lecturing at the academy, which came in handy when he showed up in med bay regressed. It was typical for Leonard to see Jimmy rather than Jim when he had an allergic reaction. Jimmy seemed to like Leonard well enough, despite him being a doctor. It was certainly convenient for when Jimmy's parents were off planet.

Leonard wasn't certain when it started or if it was Jim or Jimmy, but some how he obtained the nickname of Bones, and he knew then he wasn't getting rid of the kid anytime soon. And he didn't really want to. So when Jim asked him to be his roommate after the kid's previous roommate moved in with his caregiver, Leonard couldn't say no.

Leonard woke up to the sounds of Jimmy crying. When he first glanced over to the boy's bed he found it empty. A serge of panic rushed through him until he noticed the mess of dirty blond hair peaking out from underneath the bed.

"Jimmy?" Leonard crouched down next to the bed, peaking underneath to find the little boy, he didn't look hurt, and there were no apparent signs of an allergic reaction. Likely a nightmare, Jimmy never wanted to talk about them, but he had them often, "Hey, Darlin'."

"G'way Bones." Jimmy mumbled, curling in on himself.

"Do you want to come out from under the bed so I can help?" Jimmy didn't reply, "I can take you to your Mommy, if you want."

Leonard knew that Jimmy was more of a daddy's boy, and he probably would have had more luck had he offered to take him to George. But he also knew that George was currently in the middle of a lecture and making Jimmy wait would not help the situation. So he tried his luck with Winona.

Jimmy poked his head out from under the bed, "Mommy?"

"Yeah, do you want to see your Mommy?" Leonard held his hand out to Jimmy.

Jimmy nodded, "Mhm."

Jimmy took Leonard's hand. Reluctantly he let Leonard put some sock and shoes onto his feet. Jimmy didn't like shoes, but he knows that his Bones wants him to wear shoes so he wouldn't get owies on his feet.

Leonard held Jimmy's hand and followed him absent mindedly through the halls. He had the rout to each of his parents' offices memorized, but he was too tired and upset to pay attention to anything other than following Leonard.

Soon Jimmy found himself standing in front of the door to Winona's office. He couldn't remember putting him thumb into his mouth, but apparently he had because Leonard was gently pulling his hand down.

"Remember what I told you about sucking your thumb?"

"Icky germs."

"That's right, Darlin'." Leonard tussled Jimmy's hair, "I've got a binkie for you if you want it."

Of course Bones had a paci for him. Bones always has stuff for Jimmy.

Once Jimmy was contently sucking on his pacifier Leonard finally knocked on the door. They waited for the muffled 'Come in' from the other side. Leonard let Jimmy go in first.

"Mommy?" Jimmy mumbled around his pacifier.

Winona smiled, she'd been rather bored all morning, the company would be nice, "Hi, Jimmy. Hi Leonard." Her smiled faded when she saw tear's in Jimmy's eyes, "What's wrong, baby?"

"Had a icky dream."

"Come here." Winona opened her arms to her little boy.

No further invitation was needed. Jimmy rushed over to hug his mommy, burying his face into her shoulder. Just getting out of the room, being reminded of where he was had already calmed him down quite a bit, but cuddles were still very much needed.

"I think my wall is looking a little plain. Do you think you could make me some new pictures to hang up?" Winona asked, grabbing a few scrap papers she kept around for Jimmy and any other littles who happened to come into her office through out the day.

Jimmy grinned, "Mhm."

Leonard smiled as he watched the little boy color. He chatted a bit with Winona, mostly about classes and missions. When he noticed the time he nearly cursed, stopping himself when he remembered Jimmy was sitting on the floor right next to him. He was going to be late to his first class.

Leonard stood up, making sure he had everything he brought, not that he brought anything really, "I've gotta go. I need to get ready for class."

"We not go home yet, my Bones." Jimmy said, grabbing Leonard's hand so he couldn't leave, "We hasta stay with Mommy."

Leonard was about to correct him, explain that Jimmy didn't have to leave, but he could tell, Jimmy seemed pretty intent on staying with Leonard today. It was much easier to get excused from class on account of taking care of your little, a caregiver could even bring their little to class with them if necessary. But Leonard didn't technically have that advantage, Jimmy was just his roommate who happened to be a little, Winona and George were still listed as his primary carers.

He couldn't just skip class.

Jimmy gave him those stupid adorable puppy dog eyes and Leonard sighed. He sat back down and patted his lap for Jimmy to climb up and cuddle him. Jimmy grinned and cuddled up on Leonard's lap. He seemed quite proud of himself for convincing Leonard to stay.

Winona couldn't help but giggle a bit at the scene. Leonard wrapped tighter around Jimmy's finger than even George or Sam were.

A young cadet, likely around Jimmy's age waked thought the door, freezing in her spot when she saw the two guests. She knew Jimmy, of course, he was often in Winona's office, but she hadn't ever met Leonard, "Oh, sorry, am I interrupting?"

"It's alright. Leonard just brought Jimmy over for a little bit because he's having a bit of a rough morning." Winona explained.

"So you must be this little guy's caregiver then?" The young woman asked, smiling at Leonard.

Leonard was taken aback, Jimmy was just his roommate, that's all, "No, I-"

Jimmy didn't let him finish, because obviously Bones didn't know what he was talking about, "Mhm. He's my Bones, takes care of me lots."
