How Jimmy met Bones. How Bones became his caregiver. And how Jimmy got his favorite teddy bear Cookie.

It wasn't uncommon for a person's classification to begin presenting before the age of eighteen. That was certainly the case for Jim Kirk.

No matter how hard his parents had tried to brake it, he never quite seemed to grow out of sucking his thumb. As he got older it would happen less and less, coming out only when he was feeling particularly stressed, and occasionally while he was sleeping.

Sometimes after a hard day or while feeling tired Jim would begin to act like a child. Practically glued to his parents' sides, wanting to cuddle with his stuffed animals, play with the model star ships that were displayed in his bedroom. Eventually, George and Winona had brought out his and Sam's old toys from their attic, worried that Jim might accidentally break one of the model ships, something that surely would have resulted in tears, both from little and big Jim, even if he wouldn't let anyone see it.

Doctors always seemed to bring out Jim's little side. Sometimes just enough that only his parents or maybe his older brother would notice. Other times it was obvious. A few days after Jim's 18th birthday, when George had taken Jim to get classified, it was quite obvious. Jim had never been to the classification facility, and the test alone made him nervous. He just couldn't help it when he began to feel small.

"Don't wanna, Daddy." Jimmy cried, clinging to George.

"It'll be okay, Jimmy." George whispered.

"Can't you come with me?" Jimmy asked.

Those big puppy dog eyes were almost enough to make George scoop up his boy and carry him out of that building, "No, I'm sorry, buddy. You can't have anyone else come back with you."

"James Kirk?" A nurse called out.

Jimmy looked up at George, "Daddy?"

George kissed Jimmy's head, and gave him another tight hug, "I'll be waiting right here, okay?"

"Are you ready, Sweetheart?" The nurse asked.

Jimmy glanced back at his daddy then turned to the nurse and nodded. She lead Jimmy down the hall to a small room where they would ask him a few questions and run a couple of tests. Jimmy waited anxiously for the doctor to get there.

He froze when he heard footsteps approaching. A young man with dark brown hair, in his early twenties it looked like, was walking by. The man didn't come into the room, but he noticed Jimmy's uneasy expression and offered him a reassuring smile and small wave. Jimmy waved back and the man kept walking.

Jimmy didn't like doctors much but this one seemed nice. He had a nice smile. Jimmy liked him.

It seemed like forever before Jimmy was finally allowed to see his daddy again. The doctor was nice enough, but Jimmy didn't like her as much as the other one. The one with the brown hair who smiled at him, Jimmy liked that doctor. But she did let the nurse get his daddy when she was finally done with all of the tests, he liked that part.

"Daddy!" Jimmy reached out for the man as soon as he entered the room.

George scooped up his little boy, "Hey Jimmy."

"Doctor Williams will return shortly with his results." The nurse said.

"Thank you." George nodded to the nurse as she walked out of the room, "See, it wasn't so bad, was it?"

"Was terrible. Too many questions. And you wasn't here." Jimmy grumbled, burying his face into George's shoulder.

"Well, if it makes you feel better, after we get your results we can go get a new toy. Does that sound good?" George asked, rubbing Jimmy's back.

"Mhm." Jimmy nodded.

"What do you think you'll get?"

"New star ship. Like mommy and daddy's." Jimmy said.

"Doctor Williams." Leonard McCoy called out just before the doctor could enter the examination room.

"Yes, McCoy?" She asked, turning to face the young man.

Leonard held out his PADD to the doctor, "Ms. Jones requested a second opinion on her results. I don't think she trusts my judgement."

This certainly wasn't an uncommon occurrence, especially not when the results were delivered by a medical student rather than the doctor. Many people had their minds set on a certain classification and will insist they were tested wrong, which is rarely the case.

"Very well." Doctor Williams sighed, she motioned to Jimmy and George in the room behind her, passing Leonard her PADD, "I was just about to deliver James Kirk's results, takeover for me here. I will handle Ms. Jones."

Leonard walked through the door to find the same little boy he'd seen earlier that day. He was looking much more content now that his dad was with him, but grumpy none the less.

"Hello again." Leonard smiled.

The boy scowled at him. Jimmy certainly preferred this doctor over the other one, but he had Daddy back now, so no more doctor for him, please.

"Aww, what's wrong? You were smilin' at me earlier."

Jimmy pouted, snuggling closer to George, "Dun like doctors."

"Jimmy." George lightly scolded the boy, sure it was true but it certainly didn't need to be said out loud.

"It's alright." Leonard chuckled the slightest bit, "I guess it's a good thing I'm not a doctor yet." Okay, that was a little better, "I'm Leonard McCoy. What's your name, Kiddo?"

"Jimmy." The boy mumbled.

Leonard looked back to his PADD and scrolled through Jimmy's file, "Well, Jimmy, we've got your results back, do you want to hear them?"

Jimmy shook his head, burying his face into George's shoulder. George looked up at the younger man, curious as to the specifics. Naturally, he knew that his youngest would be classified as a little, but he couldn't have known the boy's age range.

"He's a class C, with a head space range of around three to four years old. Of course this could very." Leonard said, passing the pad into George's hands, "I take it you already have an idea of what you're doing?"

"We've been doing it for eighteen years." George chuckled.

Leonard went over a few other key points on Jimmy's file. Explaining any possible changes that might occur now that Jimmy was older and officially classified. Suggesting an adult sized pacifier and maybe some chewy toys to deal with his thumb sucking habit. Jimmy would stare at him with a curious look while he talked, but the moment Leonard would acknowledge it he would glare at the man and return his face to George's shoulder.

"Well, that about covers it. You can see the receptionist before you leave for all of his official paperwork." Leonard turned his attention back to the little boy, now peaking out from his daddy's shoulder once again, "Do you want a sticker before you go, kiddo?"

Jimmy perked up the slightest bit at the mention of a sticker and promptly nodded. Leonard smiled, he pulled one of the stickers out of his pocket and handed it to Jimmy. The little boy snatched it up quickly.

"Thank you." Jimmy mumbled.

"You're welcome, Darlin'."

Jimmy liked that nickname. He was starting to think that maybe they could be friends. He looked back down at his new sticker. It was a blue dinosaur, his favorite color, and it was sparkly. Yes, they could be friends. Jimmy liked Leonard McCoy.
