When you opened the door and saw your best friend, you let out a yelp of joy and threw your hands around him in a hug.

"I thought you wouldn't come!" you said accusingly. You had a valid reason to doubt his appearance, but we'll get to that later.

"What on earth would be more important than your birthday?" He asked, feigning surprise.

You smiled and pulled him inside.

Sirius grinned when he saw the two of you together, so you walked away from his direction, because you were sure he'd tease you about liking his brother (as he always did.)

You handed Regulus a piece of cake from the table, but he wouldn't take it.

"You already cut the cake?" He asked in disbelief. "Without me yelling happy birthday in French?"

"You were late," you said sharply. "So suck it up and eat it."

"No, that's not how it works," he shook his head. "Isn't it tradition to show appreciation for people you care about by personally feeding them the cake?"

"Reg, I'm not a mother hen," you said, rolling your eyes.

"Too bad," he stated and opened his mouth wide. You scoffed at his childishness, but fed him a part of the cake anyway.

Even before you could take away your hand, you predicted a smug smile coming, so you quickly took another piece and rubbed it all over his face.

"Oh, c'mon!" he said in disbelief, looking around for some sort of cloth.

You started laughing and Marlene, who was watching the exchange with Sirius, stifled a giggle.

"They're adorable together," she said, taking out her phone (a muggle object Sirius still didn't understand) and snapped a picture.

Hours passed, and the party died out. You could feel the time fly when you were with Regulus and your friends.

Regulus and your friends — you always thought of them as two categories, as if he wasn't under that specific label. As far as you could remember, you didn't want him to be just your friend, but how do you explain you're in love with someone when things were already complicated?

After saying goodbye to James and Lily, you didn't go back in. You stayed outside to stare at the glimmering mass of water, and Regulus had joined you soon after.

"I really thought you couldn't come," you said, throwing a stone into the lake.

"I know," he replied, his voice a bit strained.

You glanced at him then - a quick glance, one that said you were unsure of his existence.

"I'm here," he said firmly, reading your mind. "It's your birthday, you had a lovely party and I'm actually here."

"You can understand why I would doubt that," your words were soft, yet it still hurt him. But he nodded in agreement.

The past few weeks has been confusing. He had only talked to you when necessary, and positively avoided you. You asked Sirius the reason behind this, but he said it was "family problems," — two words which you never asked either of them to elaborate on, because you knew it wasn't a fun topic.

The only thing you liked about his family (other than him and Sirius) was their cat, Stardust. She was a nice, black kitten with the biggest eyes you've ever seen, and the animal always felt out of picture in such a cruel household.
