Chapter 23

A WEEK had past since Ryder's birthday. Everyone in Adventure Bay knew about how Ryder and his pups got the cake back from the thief. In the eyes of the people, Ryder and his pups were seen as heroes.
During the week, Ryder had been thinking about becoming a rescuer. Then something unexpected happened one day that made the decision for Ryder.

Captain Turbot was out on the sea on his flounder. The weather was beautiful, the sun was warm, and the sky was clear.
The beach was crowded with people. "Nice trick, Wally!" Captain Turbot cheered.

The walrus clapped his flippers and then swam up to the flounder. "You deserve a treat" Captain Turbot said, then threw a fish to Wally. Wally caught the fish, ate it, and then leaped onto the flounder.

"Wally, what are you doing?" Captain Turbot confusingly asked. The walrus walked toward the bucket of fish and dug his head into the bucket.

"Wally, don't eat the entire bucket of fish" Captain Turbot said. The walrus ignored him and continued eating. "I guess I'll be fishing this evening" the captain said.
Suddenly a strong wind blew at the flounder. Waves started taking the flounder away from shore. Dark clouds rolled in toward Adventure Bay.

"Uh oh, a storm" Captain Turbot said. Mayor Goodway was relaxing on the beach when a gust of wind took Chickaletta, who was pecking at the sand.
"Chickaletta!" Mayor Goodway yelled. The wind took the chicken up high and across the stormy sea.

"How did the weather just change so fast?" Katie said. "My chicken!" Mayor Goodway cried. "HELP!" Captain Turbot yelled from his flounder. He was unable to steer toward the shore because the waves were too strong.

"Chickaletta!" Mayor Goodway shouted in a panic.
"HELP!" Captain Turbot's voice rang across the sea.

Ryder and his pups were playing frisbee on a wide grassy space that sat on the outskirts of Adventure Bay, when the storm rolled in.
"Come on pups, we need to go home" Ryder said.
"Great, we were having so much fun" Marshall groaned.
"I'd rather go home instead of being soaked by this rain" Rocky said.

Ryder and his pups got home fast. As Ryder closed the door to the house, his phone started ringing. "Who's calling you?" Skye asked.
"Let's see" Ryder said, pulling his phone out of his pocket.
"Captain Turbot?" Ryder said. "What does he want?" Rocky said. Ryder answered the call.

Captain Turbot: Hey Ryder, I really need your help!

Ryder: Help with what?

Captain Turbot: I was out on the sea when a storm started rolling in. The waves are taking me away. I need you to save me.

Ryder: Why are you calling me? You know I'm not a rescuer. How can I save you?

Captain Turbot: If you could get a cake from a thief, then you could save me from this storm.

Ryder: ............I'll try.

Captain Turbot: Thank you Ryder! I know you can do it! Your a hero!

Ryder: Me and my pups are on the way.

Ryder looked to the pups. "Why would he call us?" Chase asked. "I guess everyone really sees us as heroes" Ryder said, "I have to change my clothes because there wet from the rain. You pups wait here".

Ryder ran to his room. He changed into his yellow t-shirt that showed his pups in the center. Then he put on a pair of dark blue pants, then he slipped on his black jacket and zippered it up halfway.

Ryder returned to the living room where his pups were waiting. "I really love that black jacket" Chase said, wagging his tail.
"Thanks Chase" Ryder said. "Come on pups, let's try to save Captain Turbot".

The pups howled and then ran outside. Ryder got on his blue ATV, put on his helmet and then let Chase and Marshall get on.
Skye and Rocky took the jet.

Ryder and his pups made it to the beach. "Somebody! Save my chicken!" Mayor Goodway screamed, as she ran up and down. "Mayor Goodway, what happened to Chickaletta?" Ryder asked.
"The wind took her!" Mayor Goodway cried. "We got this" Ryder said.
"Skye, take the jet and search for Chickaletta" Ryder said.

"On it!" Skye barked. "Is there any hovercraft I can use?" Ryder asked. "You can use that one" Mayor Goodway said, pointing to a blue hovercraft.
"I'm gonna also need a rope and buoy" Ryder said. "I found a rope!" Chase said. "And I found a buoy" Marshall said.
"Thanks pups" Ryder said, taking the buoy and rope.

He tied the rope to the buoy and then got in the hovercraft. "Ryder, be careful!" Chase barked from the dock. "I will" Ryder said.
Chase watched in worry, hoping that the waves wouldn't take Ryder.

"There's Chickaletta!" Rocky pointed. "We're coming Chickaletta!" Skye said.
She sped up the jet and flew toward the flying chicken. "Rocky, try to catch her" Skye said.
Rocky reached out his paws.
Skye slowed down the jet when they reached Chickaletta.

Rocky grabbed the chicken and put her safely in the jet. "Perfect catch!" Skye said.
Rocky smiled and said "we better get to the shore before the wind takes this small jet".
Skye steered the jet toward the shore.

"Captain Turbot, catch the buoy and hook it to the flounder" Ryder said. "Okay" Captain Turbot said. Ryder tossed the buoy and Captain Turbot caught it.
Once he put it on the flounder, Ryder started pulling the flounder toward shore.

But the flounder wouldn't budge. "Captain Turbot, you need to throw away any heavy things you might have in there" Ryder said. "It'll make the flounder lighter and easier to pull".
"Alright" Captain Turbot said.

"I'm sorry Wally, but your too heavy to be on the flounder" Captain Turbot said, picking up the heavy walrus and then throwing him into the water.
He threw a few other stuff away. "The flounder should be lighter now" Captain Turbot said.
Ryder started pulling the flounder again.

"Try steering toward the shore while I pull. It'll make it easier" Ryder said.
Captain Turbot ran to the wheel and started steering toward the shore while Ryder pulled the flounder.

The crowd on the beach started cheering as the flounder safely made it back to land.
Captain Turbot got off of the flounder and Ryder got off of the hovercraft.
"You saved me!" Captain Turbot said. "If it wasn't for Ryder, you would've been taken away just like Skye and her owner" Mayor Goodway said.

"Dude, you should become a rescuer" Jake said. Before Ryder could say something, screams came echoing across the air.
Everyone looked up to see the jet flying toward the shore out of control. The wind was very strong and Skye wasn't able to control the jet.'
"Skye! Rocky!" Ryder said, his eyes widened in fear. "Jump out of the jet right now!".

Skye, Rocky and Chickaletta jumped from the jet. Mayor Goodway caught Chickaletta.
"Aww, my precious little chicken" Mayor Goodway said, squeezing the Chickaletta.
Ryder caught Rocky and Skye fell on Chase.
"Oops, sorry" Skye said. "It's okay" Chase said.
Everyone watched the jet as it crashed into the beach and exploded.

"That jet lasted us pretty long" Marshall said. "It was pretty strong for a jet made out of trash" Rocky said.

"Before everyone heads home to take shelter from this storm" Ryder began. "I would like to announce something".
"Is it that your becoming a rescuer?" Mayor Goodway asked with excitement. Ryder laughed lightly.

"For the past week, I've been thinking about becoming a rescuer along with my pups. Adventure Bay really needs a rescue team. Today my decision has been made.
Me and my pups will become the rescue team of Adventure Bay!" Ryder announced.

The crowd bursted into roars of cheers. "Oh my goodness! Ryder!" Mayor Goodway exclaimed.
"I knew it! I knew they were going to become rescuers some day!" Captain Turbot cheered.

"I don't know how to thank you. This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to Adventure Bay" Mayor Goodway said.
"There's no need for thanks" Ryder said. "Helping and saving others is something that rooted in our hearts".
