𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐄 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐃 towards the classroom door as a figure emerged, head bent, eyes cast to the ground and pale fingers clenching tightly on the straps of her backpack. A hood was pulled over her head and strands of her unkempt black hair stuck out in an unpleasant manner.

The class was silent and so was the teacher whose finger had stopped mid air upon noticing the figure by the door. The girl approached, digging furiously into the pocket of her jeans and she got out a note, handing it over to the teacher who reluctantly collected it from her thin fingers like it was a bomb about to explode.

She turned, her eyes still glued to the ground as she walked towards the seat far at the back and away from everyone. The whole class watched her like she was an alien as she placed herself on the chair and got out a note. She didn't open it but stared ahead, her hollow gaze burning into the teacher who cleared his throat once then twice and continued his lecture.

"Yo," Milo nudged his best friend Hoshi who was scribbling the words pouring out of the teacher's mouth into his notes. "Adina looks fucking horrible, man. I didn't know a break up could cause someone to skip school for three weeks and turn them into a skeleton."

"There's more that meets the eyes, Milo," Hoshi replied, not looking up. "Something else could have happened that made her skip school."

"Like what?" Milo grunted. "And if something did happen, how come no one's talking about it?"

"Not everyone likes talking about their business, Milo," Hoshi scolded him. "And Adina is the type of person who likes to keep things to herself.

"Of course you'd know that, you practically stalk her," Milo laughed and Hoshi turned to glare at him.

"I do not stalk her."

"Yeah, yeah," Milo waved his hands and brought his pen to his lips. "You know, since Brad broke up with her, I think you might have a chance."

"Milo," Hoshi groaned.

"I mean," Milo continued. "You've been crushing on her since freshman year, this is your chance buddy."

"No it's not," Hoshi's ears flamed. "Now can you drop it and stop talking? I'm trying not to get distracted here."

"Whatever you say," Milo saluted him and turned to his notes while Hoshi rolled his eyes.

The class went by and the bell rang, making students burst up from their chairs and sprint out of the class before the teacher could even gather his materials.

"I'll see you at lunch, Hosh," Milo said and Hoshi nodded towards him as he walked away adjusting his durag.

Hoshi stood on his feet and slung his backpack on his shoulder. He was about to leave when he noticed someone still at the back of the class, their head on the table and their body rising and falling in slow and steady breaths.

Hoshi's chest tightened with the thought that people who sat right next to her ignored her and left her there, knowing that they wouldn't have failed to wake her up a month ago. He approached her and shook her gently till she stirred.

Emerald bloodshot green eyes opened and slowly took focus of their surroundings finally, landing on the figure above. Adina sat up and looked around, noticing the class was empty, just she and this boy.

"It's time for lunch," Hoshi said, giving her a small smile.

"Why didn't you just ignore me like the rest of them?" Her voice sounded hoarse and thick, nothing like the voice he knew so well months ago.

"I'm not like the rest of them," he answered. When Brad had claimed to have broken up with Adina saying she had been cheating on him by sleeping with grown men, Hoshi found it hard to believe. He had seen how Adina had loved and adored Brad, she wasn't the type to cheat. People began to spread the rumours and Brad told everyone to avoid her if they ever set eyes on her and since Brad is the so-called king of the school, they listened. But not Hoshi.

"Didn't you hear the rumours?" She asked, leaning against her chair, her blood shot eyes never leaving him.

"I don't believe in rumours," he answered without missing a beat.

Adina hummed and got on her feet, swaying a little. Her backpack fell to the ground as she stood and its content spilled.

Hoshi's eyes widened as a sachet of what looked like hard drugs dropped out of her backpack.
