29. oh my god they were roommates (yes i know i'm very original)

"Hey! Yuu! Grim!" someone called.

They saw Deuce running towards them, with Ace and Jack tagging along not too far behind. Yuu had never been happier to see them.

"Are you guys here to save us!?"

"Not you, Grim." Ace said bluntly. "It's kind of our fault that Yuu is in this situation, isn't it? It would be bad if they caught a cold...or something?"

Grim shook his head. "Stop trying to act tough, will you?"

"We've already talked to prefect Rosehearts about it. If you're okay with sleeping in a 4-person room, it shouldn't be a problem."

Yuu could've cried, but they held it in. Bless their dumb-idiot friends.

"Oh my god, I love you both so much."

Ace rolled his eyes. "Yeah yeah you're welcome, cut the dramatics."

"Ah- oh, um." Deuce crossed his arms and tugged at his sleeves. "No problem." He cringed internally at his own response.

Must this happen every time they were with him, or when they said something that could be interpreted as romantic? If only he could still his pounding heart.

Ace side-eyed his blue-haired companion. He had noticed how Deuce acts around Yuu. It didn't take much sleuthing. Whenever the two were close, like Yuu leaning over to read something off of their notes, Deuce would get all stiff. Once in a while he'd catch a glimpse of the red dusting his ears. Because Ace is well...Ace, he thought it was funny and brought it up a few times. Whenever he did, Deuce would either brush it off or get defensive. Ace already knew what was happening.

But Ace could kinda see where Deuce was coming from. He thought of them as a thorn in his side at first, not gonna lie, but after getting to know them, Yuu was actually pretty nice. They're easy to talk to and they looked out for others; they were also one of the reasons why the Magift tournament wasn't cancelled. They were helping him and the others again now too. Sure, the two had arguments, but most of it was for jokes and easy to resolve. He was comfortable calling them a friend. But he doubted it was going to go any further than that. God forbid something blossomed between them.

He didn't want to screw up a decent relationship again.

After a silence that felt a lot longer than it should have, Jack broke the ice with a concern.

"I feel like it would be cramped in a 4-person bedroom. Does Heartslabyul have any free rooms?"

"Our dorm hasn't had any expelled or held back students, so unfortunately there aren't any free rooms."

"Then do you want to come to Savanaclaw?"

"HEH!?"

"Oh...are you sure?"

Yuu was touched at first by Jack caring enough about them to offer something like that, but then they remembered that Leona existed. He probably wouldn't want their pinky toe past the entrance of the dorm. Were they really about to risk that? They didn't want to be in a small room with four other people either, though.

"I bad mouthed Azul, but I still couldn't do anything in the end. I'm sure that Leona and the others wouldn't object after all your help during the Magical Shift Tournament."

"Ah, I guess."

Deuce, Ace and Grim looked at Jack with smug grins.

"Oh ho?"

"Hehh? Jack's a pretty nice dude with Yuu..."

"Kind of unexpected, don't ya think?"

Jack felt his face burn up a little as he denied their claims. "You're getting the wrong idea! It'll just be troublesome for me if Yuu doesn't win against Azul before the next test!"
