i sit on the couch. she sits by my side.

- hayden, we need to talk.

- is everything okay?

- the surprise... it was a lie, i made that up.

- what do you mean? then why didn't you wanna see him?

- i think i'm not ready to see him again after so long. - i look down and sigh.

i get home and see a man leaving by the back door. theo!? no, no way it's him, this is just my mind pranking me, i've been thinking a lot about him lately.

- uhm, hayden, i'm home. - i yell so she can hear me.

- hey liam! bought my cake?

- OUR cake, yes. it still feels so lonely to be just the two of us on our birthday, theo was always the one to cheer us up. - i say sadly.

- well, at least we have a cake, right?

- and each other. - i smile softly.

- oh yeah, that too, but we have cake. - she laughs, i do the same.

- absolutely. wanna sing "happy birthday to you" or just eat the cake?

- uhm, eat the cake? - she says like the answer is obvious.

- sure - i smile - ladies first. - i point to the cake indicating she can go ahead and take a slice.

the girl cuts the cake. - want the first slice?

- you can have it, thanks.

- thank you! - she starts eating the cake and i cut a slice to myself.

- gosh, it tastes REALLY GOOD.

- right!

- so, who was your date? - i provoke.
