You took it too far, Tremaine. All you had to do was help him get through it, not…
The next day, Shandy came back to school. I had been trying to figure out why she didn’t come the day before, but then I realized Nicole, one of her friends, was absent that day too. They must’ve skipped together.
Shaking my head, I thought, Shandy never would have done something like that before, when we were friends.
It was a shame, really. It was a shame that Shandy and I weren’t friends anymore, and that I had to be wondering if she was okay and what was going on in her life. Nothing was stopping me from just going up to her and asking her if she’s alright, besides her bad attitude.
I’ve been through a fight with Shandy before, but that time I was the cause. And that time, I was the one that made up with her. So this time, since Shandy started it, Shandy will end it.
Second period was Algebra, right after Living Environment. During first period, I was scared to even glance in Kevon’s direction, but I could feel his hot stare coming my way every now and then. He would always remember the time he asked me out and I fainted, and so would I. I’m just lucky I woke up before our lunch period ended.
“Alright, y’all. The exams are on their way, and we need to start some serious studying. So take out y’all notebooks and turn to page 34 of the textbook.” Mr. Garcia said to us. Almost everyone slid their textbooks and notebooks out of their bags and began working. The only ones who didn’t were the bad kids, and Kevon. He could fit under the ‘bad’ category, but most of the time he did his work.
I looked over at him, and he sat in his desk staring at the desktop. He didn’t look okay.
“Kevon? Do you plan on beginning your work any time soon?” Mr. Garcia asked him. Kevon shifted a little bit in his seat, and I watched intensely as he gagged, and gagged, and gagged, and then threw up all over his desk. Mr. Garcia, along with some girls in the class, went over to help him.
“One of you, take him downstairs to the nurse’s office for me please?” Mr. Garcia asked. The entire female population of the classroom took Kevon like a child and rushed him downstairs to the nurse. Looking around and seeing that I was completely surrounded by boys, I decided to join them. I dashed down the stairs and to the mediocre nurse’s office.
She snatched him from a girl’s arms and closed the door on us. That’s when a riot started. Each girl banged against the office’s glass walls, begging to be let in to make sure he was okay. The nurse, getting frustrated with them, asked Kevon to choose one girl to enter the room with him. I could hear her through the glass.
They all started screaming and putting on their prettiest faces, tempting him to choose one of them. He stood up and scanned the crowd, as if looking for someone. And then he looked straight at me.
The nurse allowed him to open the door, and he pushed through the girls and walked straight up to me, Tremaine Aldo. He took my hand in his, and led me back to the door. As we walked, I looked into the jealous eyes of all my classmates, all the girls that ever called me ‘raggedy’ or ‘poor’ or ‘ugly’.
They made snide comments like, “Her? Out of all these girls?!” “Now I know Kevon is really sick, if he’s touching that wretch.”
But Kevon never let my hand go, not even while the nurse gave him the Alka Seltzer Cold water to drink. He didn’t even let go as the nurse urged him to go to the back and rest on one of the beds. I lied there right with him, and he didn’t let go. He stroked my hand with his soft thumb the whole time, until we both fell asleep.
