"There you go!" The waitor said, putting down the tray of paper cups which had their names on its sides.

"For Inej, cappucino," he read, and Inej raised her hand to indicate it was hers.

"for Jes-"

"Jesper, that's me," he reached out for his mint mojito excitedly.

"So that must mean the black coffee is for Ass!" The waitor said politely, giving the remaining cup to the last man at the table.

"I'm sorry, did you just call me Ass?" Kaz asked, not at all sounding sorry.

"Az with a 'z'," Inej corrected, pointing to his name on the cup. "The barista must have forgotten the K."

"Ass Brekker," Jesper snorted.

Kaz reddened with anger and the waitor involuntarily took a step back. "You're Kaz? Kaz Brekker? Oh Saints, I'm so sorry on behalf of Y/N- she must have had a long day, I-"

"Shut up," Kaz snapped, and the waiter didn't have to be told twice. He went his way, possibly to find Y/N and yell at her for her mistake.

"Ass Brekker sounds pretty incredible if you ask me," Jesper muttered, still grinning.

"This is why I don't like stopping at random pubs after heists," Kaz said, clenching his teeth.

"C'mon, we are all tired and Slat's miles away," Inej reasoned, taking a sip of her cappuccino.

Fortunately for Kaz, the conversation drifted off to other less amusing subjects, but he found himself glancing once or twice at the counter, to see if he could glare at the girl with y/h/c hair.

-

Even after they were about to leave, Kaz was yet to get a good look at the girl who made him feel humiliated for the first time in his life. While he was passing by the counter, he craned his neck to spot the barista.

Feeling rather entertained, you stopped what you were doing and stared back at him with an eyebrow raised.

He was caught red-handed and he wondered why he was feeling humiliated again. It's not like he was checking you out. Nope — even if he noticed how you had the prettiest eyes he's ever seen, he totally wasn't checking you out.

"Need anything for the road?" You called out.

He stopped in his tracks, and so did Inej and Jesper.

He was alarmed at how amused you sounded. He strode over to you and slammed the counter with his gloved hands. Not harshly, but exasperated.

"My name is Kaz," he said sharply, glaring you down.

"That's the most aggressive introduction I've ever heard. Nice to meet you Kaz, I'm Y/N," you held out your hand but he simply backed away, feeling a bit weird for losing his temper.

"Let's go then?" Jesper asked cautiously. Kaz ignored everything and stormed out, leaving you to shrug and continue working.

-

A week later, Kaz might have had a lot of adventures and stories but you were still in the same pub, pouring drinks and laughing with strangers like always. It wasn't much, but it was better than anything else Ketterdam had to offer you. The job provided you with opportunities to meet with people from all walks of life, whether that's grishas, traders, pirates or criminals.

There were downsides too, like how easily people faded away. You could meet someone for the first and last time, and maybe they'll never walk into the bar again, meaning you'll never get to talk to them again.
