She has been tapping her feet all along the drive. After some minutes, she taps on the dashboard with her hands to.
I say nothing, driving in silence, occasionally tapping my own fingers on the steering wheel.
She even tried calling her mom six times.
Again.
Again.
And again.
But no one picked up, I know she's trying to show that's she's calm but its messing her mind.
She's panicking.
When we arrive to her house, I park in the driveway, she rushes out and I follow her.
There's another car in the driveway, hopefully it's her mom's.
She bangs on the door, it's not to hard, not to soft, but it's urgent.
I rub her back, calming her as she melts into my touch.
She bangs again. Six times.
And then the door opens. A lady standing there with wide eyes.
"Mom," May whispers and tackles the lady into a hug, making her step back.
"Hey honey, what happened?" Her mother asked confused, rubbing May's head and her eyes meet mine in question.
"Your phone," May replies between sniffles and I swallow a lump.
She's crying.
"I texted you and you didn't reply," May continues and her mother understands.
"Baby, I lost it at the grocery store, I didn't know you would be texting today, I'm so sorry," her mother comforts her.
I step outside to give them privacy. Her mother is okay and she will be too.
I can't help but think of this is what it feels like to have a parent.
To be cared for.
To have someone to lean on.
