M A Y
"Where's the guy that came with you?" Mom asks after a moment and I look back to see Owen gone.
"I'll go and check outside," I tell her and she nods her head.
When I step outside in the driveway, I see her him standing there staring at nothing. He's not moving or tapping, just standing there.
"Hey," I call him softly and he turns to look at me.
His eyes are sad and pained and I don't know why but I feel like something's wrong.
"Hey," he tries to smile.
"You can come in now," I say and he nods, following me.
For a moment I wanted to ask him what was wrong but I decided not too.
"Kids, you can take a seat at the dining table and I'll bring some snacks," mom says and we nod.
He follows me to the dining table and takes a seat in front of me.
"Thank you," I say and he nods at me, smiling.
"And sorry," I say and he tilts his head in confusion.
"For making you miss school, I know this can make your parents mad and you have important..." I stop speaking when I see him still.
He has his forehead creased, like something pains him so much but he just can't say what.
I want him to say it. To tell me what's wrong.
Mom comes in with a plate with six cookies and two glasses of milk and I cringe.
I get up from my seat and go get another plate with four cookies on them and place the plate in front of him.
He looks up at me thankfully as I sit back down while mom looks amused as she leaves the dining room.
