I went in and placed my hands on his desk, leaning on them slightly. "You need to make sure your assassins follow you and your rules" I spat quietly, doing the exact opposite of what Nathan just said. Joseph looked up at me, the look on his face saying his anger was spiking. "Excuse you?" His glare intensified and I almost backed off. Almost.
"You've gotten soft. Your rules aren't being followed, old man. You know? Rule 4; your partner is your life? See how many of them actually follow that. See how many of them actually respect you enough to help fellow guild members, who by the way, are your property" I spat. Then I turned to walk out. I almost got to the door but Joseph grabbed my hand and twisted it between my shoulder blades, pressing my face into the wall. I gritted my teeth to keep from crying out. "You forget that you are one of my assassins girl. You forget that you owe me everything that you are. Lecturing me about assassins following rules!? Remind me of the first rule" When I didn't answer he pushed my arm higher and I groaned. "Your guildmaster holds your respect" I got out, him pushing my arm harder, making breathing hard because my chest was being squashed against the wall. "Exactly. How many times do you fall to your knee when you see me? How many times do you address me as 'Sir'?" He twisted and threw me on the floor. I kept my eyes on the floor as he started speaking, trying to catch my breath. "If you can't see that you're no better than any one of the others then you may as well stay on the floor like a dirty animal" He came closer and crouched down, lifting my head "Remember that you're nothing without me"
I stayed on the floor as he made his way into the adjoining bathroom. Then once I knew he wasn't going to see me, I got up and wiped myself off. I made my way out to my chair, fixated on making Joseph see that Ashton was the one at fault. That was why I hated being the only female assassin. I may have had a little leeway with most things, but I have to constantly prove myself. Also, when I do something wrong, the punishment is worse than it would be for any of the others. If Nathan was to do what I just did, he'd have gotten slapped across the face and sent out for the day but that's about it. None of the shit that I just faced.
Knowing that I wasn't dismissed, I sat in my chair and silently wished Joseph would see things from my point of view. I know life isn't fair but this is absolutely ridiculous.
Joseph walked out of the bathroom, holding a cup of water. I suppressed a smile when I realised what he was going to do with it. He went to where Ashton's unconscious body was lying and threw the water in his face. As he jumped awake I shouted "Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey" because why not? The look on his face plus the exasperated sigh Joseph let out made it hard for me to remember that I was mad.
Once everyone had recovered Joseph sat behind his desk, directing his glare at Ashton this time. "Wanna tell me what happened the other night?" His tone was threatening and I could tell it scared Ashton. I gave him a smug smile and waited for him to tell Joseph everything. "We did the mission and as we were leaving Raina got us into trouble and then got us out of it" I opened my mouth to object, ready to start yelling again but Joseph held up his hand, silencing me. "You want to think about that?" Joseph's tone was challenging. Ashton knew what would happen if he got caught lying and was seemingly weighing the pros and cons of telling Joseph the truth now.
"We did the mission and as we were leaving we got into trouble and Raina got us out of it" he said, only changing his explanation slightly. "Would Raina say the same thing if I were to ask her" They were talking about me as if I weren't right there, but I still smirked triumphantly as Ashton visibly gulped.
"Wait outside" Ashton got up and left the office but I could hear his erratic heartbeat outside the door. "What happened? Tell me calmly or I'm sending you out" he warned.
I told him the whole story, about how we finished and were ready to go when I flipped the guard and Ashton killed him. Then how I was abandoned and left to die and about my horrible walk back as a result of Ashton being a self centred halfwit. I repeatedly had to calm myself to keep from being sent out and not being able to tell my story.
By the time I finished Joseph did not look the least bit impressed. He dismissed me and told me to take the rest of the day off as long as I peacefully sent Ashton in.
I was totally fine with those terms and walked out of the office smiling. When I saw Ashton I tapped him on the shoulder and sent him in. Not before poking my tongue out though. Childish I know but he wouldn't say anything because he was in enough trouble as it was.
