I walked into the shop hand in hand with James and we looked around until we found an employee.
"Hey, Can I help you?" The man with tattoos surrounding every inch of his body asked
"Uh yeah, my girlfriend, Audrey is here to get a tattoo." He said releasing my hand
"Yeah no problem, come over here so, we can discuss what you want." He said leading me over to a small metal desk with two chairs
I sat down in one of the rather large chairs.
"So what's your name?" 'Chris' asked holding up an information sheet he has to fill out
"Audrey Elina Taylor," I said
"Birthday, and age?" He asked
"Today, June 1, 1997, and I'm eighteen."
"Happy birthday! And have you thought this through?" He asked
"Thoroughly." James and I both said as he gripped my shoulders from behind me
Chris laughed and continued with the questions
"So what kind of tattoo do you want to get?"
"I want three crows on my wrist with shadows under them." I said
He scribbled and sketched on a piece of paper until he came up with a result, he lifted it up to show me.
"That's perfect!" I said
"Great, I can take you into the back room right now, although we do have another guy back there getting a tattoo on his shoulder blade. You cool with that?"
"Yeah!" I said not realizing who it was
"I'm out!" James said walking to the waiting room
Chris looked at me shocked with a "what the fuck is going on?" Expression painted on his face
"He's afraid of needles." I said
"There's always one of them" he said leading me to the back room where I saw a man on his stomach getting a black bird on his shoulder blade with the words "Say We Can Fly" in cursive under it. Oh God. Maybe if I'm silent he won't know it's me...
He motioned me to sit/lay down on a dentist chair thingey so he could put the image on my wrist and then start the tattoo.
He disinfected my wrist and placed a stencil paper thing on it. When he removed the paper the image was on my wrist, but it wasn't permanent yet.
He brought out the metal tattoo pen and dipped it in black ink.
"Squeeze this stress ball if it starts to hurt," Chris said tossing me a blue stress ball.
"Do you have any black ones?" I asked, that got a laugh out of him and the girl who was tattooing the guy next to me
"That's what I asked!" The guy sat up to admire his new tattoo and when he swept the shaggy hair out of his face I was reassured who it was. Braden.
"No. We don't have any black ones, would you prefer yellow?" Chris asked
"Nope." I said leaning back into my seat pretending I didn't know my best friend was in the chair next to me trying to get a good look at my face.
"Audrey?!" Braden asked staring at me
"Mmhmm." I said hiding the pain in my voice as Chris began to tattoo my wrist
"Wait the two of you know each other?" Chris asked
"Yep! She's only been my friend since I was seven and she was four." Braden said "i haven't seen you in, what? Two years?" Braden asked
"Yep."
Braden looked at me smiling and then it looked like he had a flashback.
"Today's your birthday!" He said smiling
"Yeah it is..." I said "At least you remembered." I said
"My parents don't remember mine either." Chris said
"My parents are divorced." Braden and I said at the same time
"Are the two of you related?" Chris asked
"No. Our parents are just good friends." I said
My sleeve started to slip down
"Sweet heart you're gonna have to pull that up," Chris said
I pulled up my sleeve to my shoulder and watched as Braden and Chris were washed over with shock. And then I remembered.
"Aud?" Braden asked
"What?" I asked looking down
"Did you do that to yourself?"
"Some of them."
"And the others?" Chris asked
"James." I said, I know Braden knew who he was
We had texted each other for the first year of his career. We would text every morning and every night, about school, my parents recent divorce, his music. We lost touch when he started recording his first album.
Braden walked out of the room leaving his shirt behind.
fuck! I thought
Chris looked at me.
"Are you in a safe environment?"
"More or less. He only does it when I make him mad... Or when he gets drunk."
"Why do you stay with hi-" he was cut off by the yelling outside the room
"Because if I left him, he'd kill my family."
About 15 minutes later Chris finished my tattoo and the yelling finally stopped
Braden came into the room with a bloody lip and bad news.
"He ran off before I could call the police..." He said
I quickly ran to him to address the injuries
"You shouldn't have done that." I said
"Aud, you're my best friend. I had to!" He said "Now let me see your arm." I handed my wrist to him
He ran his fingers over all of the cuts, being gentle so, I wouldn't cringe.
"How long have you been doing this?"
"I started before he did, about two years now."
"You know you could've talked to me!" He said releasing my arm and looking hurt
"I tried. You were never there to talk to me!" I yelled tears brimming in my eyes
But before I could wipe them away he kissed me. Yes, The Braden Barrie's lips were now crashing with mine. In perfect sync, he kissed me with passion, passion James had never had. Hell, I'd never even kissed James.
"Audrey Elena Taylor, I will always be here for you." He said wrapping me in his strong arms.
James was now a past memory, that page of my life had been turned.
