5 years later

It's been 5 years since the war. The war that ended the hunger games. The war that killed President Snow. The war that killed many innocent lives including my best friends Haymitch and Finnick. The war that brought Katniss and I back together.

Beetees hovercraft had crashed somewhere between district 8 and 9. He survived with a few bumps and bruises and a search crew returned him to district 13.

Most of the districts were in bad shape. But the people came together and helped out. I visited district 4 when we buried Finnick. They mourned his loss, as did I. Finnick was my best friend and he did something that I could never repay, he saved Katniss under my request. I will never forget that.

The nurse found her family, and suffered a loss of her youngest daughter. She was 3 years old and died at the hand of the Capital. The nurse and her family moved to district 13 to escape the memories of Panem. I have forgiven her for her confused and twisted mistakes. I can't fully blame her anyways, it was under the threat of the Capital.

As for Katniss and I, we are doing ok. Better. We stayed in District 13 and built a house of our own. I worked in a bakery the town built up. And we helped shape up the district and are even beginning to build above ground. I've worked with Katniss every day to help her remember more about her family and me. I tried not to mention the games. I comforted her in her dark times when she had nightmares from the influence of the Capital. Occasionally we would cry together at the memories and losses we have suffered together. I tell her how much I love her. And now I believe that she has grown to love me again, which was more than I could've ever dreamed of.

Now there are no more games or Capital. The districts have slowly started to work together and share food and help the less fortunate districts like 13. There is much more hope and promise for a safe and happy future.

I decide to bring Katniss some bread. Pita bread. Her favorite. I also know that the time is right for us to move into the future and begin a real life without the games.

"Hey beautiful" I place a plate in front of her. "Would you like some bread? "

She smiles and takes a slice. A ring falls from the center. She gasps. I kneel in front of her.

"Katniss. I've been thinking and I want to move on from the memories of our crazy past. I can't do it alone and I was hoping you would come with me. Into a new life and a new future. You are the light in that life. You are my light that guides and inspires me and I would love to follow it through my whole journey. Katniss, will you be might light and marry me?" I stare in hope. I hope my speech was memorable. I didn't think about it. I just said what I was thinking.

She is crying, in the most beautiful way.

"Yes Peeta. Yes" She takes the ring and gives it to me. I place it on her finger. I take her into my arms.

"Guide me into our new life" I whisper.

"We will guide each other."
