Mocking Jay TRAPPED

Chapter 16. A Plan

"Open up"  Soldiers pound on the door. 

I glance at Jason, then at the closet. Katniss doesn't even know what's happening. I can only hope she won't exit the closet to find out.

"What do you want?" Jason says, holding his gun to the door.

"That's not for you to know. I suggest you open the door!"  A gun fires at the door again.

I jolt. I am scared that they will find Katniss and take her again.    We don't have any sort of plan.

"Tell us what you want!!!"  Jason demands.

"Primrose Everdeen and Peeta Mellark!  Hand them over or you will all die!" 

I'm confused. Why would they want Prim? 

"They aren't in here" Jason tries to cover up

"Prove it!"  Another gunfire.

Jason points to the closet. I hesitate, then silently rush over.

"Alright. Come in"  His voice is unsure. I hear him take in a breath as he unlocks the metal door.

I hear the soldiers bust in. They slam tables around, the computer and I hear a loud smack, and I know that Jason was the victim. I fight every urge to run out and kill them all, but that would give prim and Katniss away.

Suddenly I hear footsteps nearing our hiding place. I squeeze my eyes shut. The door opens

"Ah what do we have here?  Peeta Mellark, his wife and...prim. Oh prim I'm so sorry that we might have to make some changes to that doll face"  He smirks, grabbing her shoulder.

I jump in front of her, punching the guy in the face. I hold up my gun and push Katniss and Prim out.

"Go!  Run!"  They listen, thankfully, but I am left to 3 more soldiers. 2 ran after them.

"So sorry that we have to kill you...lover boy" They taunt me.  I raise my gun. "And Katniss...she'll die only remembering how terrible you are" 

They are killing her. "No don't kill her. Please. Ill do anything. Anything at all. Take me instead."  I plead with them.

"Oh but we are already going to kill you. The plans are set. But maybe I can spare the girl's life of you tell Panem to stop the rebellion. Tell them your idea was foolish. Stop the war"  He stares at me intensely. "Or else she will die in one hour." 

I can't believe it. To spare Katniss's life I must stop the war?  Then the Hunger Games will remain. People still starving. District 13 would probably be demolished for sure. But Katniss...What should I do?  Would it be selfish to save her for my sake and leave the rest of the district's to suffer. No, they won't suffer. Katniss would surely lead the war. But I would never be able to talk to her again if i was...

"Well?"  The soldier demands my decision. "Take me. Ill tell Panem. But only if you let me speak to Katniss before you kill me" 

"Hmm..I will talk to President Snow. Until then, you shall stay in here. I will make sure her life is spared until the final decision." 

I let out a breath I wasn't sure that I was holding.  I imagine all the district's...being put down and punished for their fighting. The Capital might bomb more than district 13. Katniss and i were the leaders of the rebellion. Katniss...mocking Jay...the district's. Wait. The districts would surely fight back if I told then that Katniss was being killed. There would be huge uprisings. The Capitals plan could backfire...and it will.

I start to plan things out in my head. Though there's not much planning when I know I will be executed through half of it.

I'm sure that its morning again when I hear a pounding on the door.

It busts open and at least 5 soldiers come through..followed by President Snow. I glare at him.

"What's the decision?" 

"President Snow has decided to have you tell the districts to call off the war. Then Katniss's life is spared. You shall be executed at nightfall."

This will work out perfectly. Except for my execution of course. But if I can casually add in some words to get the district's riled up then maybe...maybe the Capital will lose this war.

"Okay so when?"  I question, gaining confidence towards them.

"In two hours. Until then you stay here"   They start to leave

"Hey what about Katniss. I need to speak with her before I leave. I need to say goodbye"  I will call off this deal if they don't let me.

He looks at Snow for permission.

"Fine. Come now. Make it quick"
