It was as if time stopped.
Her question had thrown him off balance. All he could do was stare into the raven girl's deep dark eyes. She returned his gaze, never breaking eye contact. His heart thudded rapidly, and his forehead was starting to bead with sweat.
"Well?" She waited.
"Mikasa, you've upset Mr. Smith," her blonde friend tugged on her shirt sleeve.
"Will you answer?" She ignored her friend.
The blonde boy fidgeted from foot to foot, but she crossed her arms, squinted her eyes and glared at her teacher. The teacher let out a nervous chuckle--he had to regain his scholarly composure.
"It is unfortunate." He said, averting his gaze. He scribbled the two student's names on a late pass, happy that another class will interrupt her interrogation. "Sad to say, Mikasa, but I don't have an answer for you"
Erwin finished writing the excuses, and handed Armin his and then Mikasa hers. Armin gladly took late pass and ran out of the empty classroom, but Mikasa refused it. She still looking at Erwin's handwriting as if it was the ugliest thing she'd ever seen.
"Mikasa...you'll be tardier if you don't head to your next period." Erwin said, gently. "Please, take the pass and be on your way, now."
Mikasa slowly took the paper out of his hands and made her way to the door. Before she stepped out, she looked over her shoulder. She looked directly into Erwin's vibrant blue eyes. Her small, pink lips were pressed in a hard line. Erwin's heart thudded loudly, but he forced a smile.
"You're lying, Mr. Smith. You do know the answer...but you don't want to say it."
Erwin blinked. He couldn't believe her tenacity.
"Oh? How can you be so sure about that, Mikasa?"
Mikasa sighed. "We've been watching you, Mr. Smith. We know you know a bunch of things, but it's like a cat has your tongue. It's like you reject the whole truth, and you think the tough things will go away if you don't speak about them."
"So." He said timidly, "What does that make me then?"
"A coward."
