Chapter 8

After school, Sasha, Blair, and I took the bus home. On the ride, I didn’t see Gladys at all. She usually is on every ride.

We soon walked up to my house; I grabbed the key under the mailbox, and opened the door.

I only heard the TV on. It seemed like no one else was in the house.

We all walked into the kitchen, and I found a note on the counter;

Crystal,

We all went to the grocery store

Call if you need anything!

M.

My Mom always signed M. because it just meant... well, Mom.

“Okay, I guess we have the house to us for about... Eh, maybe 2 hours.” I said.

My Mom always goes to the grocery store with a list, but maybe 5 items turns into 50.

“Okay! Let’s go to my room! Just drop your stuff by the door to the deck.” I said.

We all went up about five flights of stairs, to my room to change into our swimsuits.

My house is the type of beach house, where its not wide, but very tall and thin.

We walked into my room, and I noticed my stuff was all in disarray.

“Ugh! Joseph!” I screamed.

The kid always goes through my stuff! I have no idea why!

“Whatever, let’s just go swimming!” Sasha said impatiently, already in her swim suit.

“Where’s Blair?” I said.

“Oh, he took the bathroom.”

“Okay” I said. I already had my swimsuit underneath my clothes, so I was all ready to go.

We got down to the shore, and all three of us stood there, gawking at the sea. In the distance, a school of dolphins were jumping out of the water.

We all looked at each other, smiled, and ran into the water. We were in the shallows splashing around like little kids.

Then I felt a tingling in my legs, and I dove into deeper water. I heard two other splashes and knew that Sasha and Blair followed me. I soon realized that with four pushes with my tail, Blair and Sasha were like ants, from the distance.

When I finally swam back to them Blair was staring at our tails with wide eyes.

“Wow.” He said in disbelief.

“Yeah.” I said splashing him.

“Hey!” He yelled as he splashed me back. It was a huge wave of water, I held my hands out in front of me, and it just stayed there. I opened my eyes, realizing that I closed them.

“Woah! Not normal!” Said Blair.

“No way.” Sasha said in disbelief.

“Me too!” She said, scaring me and making me jump from surprise, and the water dropped.

“What?” I asked. No way she can have powers too.

“Yeah!” She said as she began to demonstrate.

She held her hand above the water and focused very hard. Then a tentacle-like shape of water rose above the surface. Then with a quick flip of her hand, it turned to ice.

“Wow!” I said as the ice bobbed on the water.

Then, suddenly, the sky turned dark. The once sunny sky and turquoise water was now a dark storm. The sky was dark grey, and the ocean was as black as night.

I grabbed Blair by the arm and linked arms with Sasha and swam toward the shore, but we weren’t moving.

I pushed as hard as I could against the water with my tail, but we weren’t moving. I moved my hand towards my necklace but, some force was keeping my hand from getting to Murphy.

Don’t resist Crystal, come to the water. Don’t be afraid. I thought it was Murphy, but the voice was smooth, and clear.

I looked over at Blair, and saw that he was no longer moving. He was so pale he looked blue. His usually toned, tan body was limp and scrawny in my arms, and he was slowly sinking, face down in the water.

“NO!” I screamed at him. I tried to pick him up out of the water, but some thing held him under. I looked down into the water, and I saw piercing green eyes, blood red hair, and a sharp-toothed, wicked, smile.

It was pulling him under!

NO! You can’t take him! I screamed in my head.

He is no use to you Crystal. He will only slow you down in your journey.  The smooth voice now sounded like breaking ice.

Then with one smooth motion, the sky turned blue again, the ocean was now a turquoise color, and I was alone.

In the blink of my eye, like nature was disturbed because of it, everything was dark. My body was slowly sinking, and there was no gravity.

I opened my eyes and saw the surface of the water about 100 feet above me. I looked down and saw long, wrinkly, black fingers with long talons holding onto the base of my tail, and red hair, streaming behind the creature’s head.

I screamed. That was all I could do to get the creature’s attention.

She turned her head, and all I saw was sharp teeth, and green cat-eyes before I blacked out.
