Sky sat and wait, the air smelled salty. As he looked back and forth between the dragons all around them, he wondered about the other continent. The savanna, dried grass and antelope everywhere. He could just imagine finally catching one, and eating it.
He felt someone touch his scales around his belly. It was Wren. A smile appeared on his face, even though now he had a thought about taking Wren with him and risking her own life.
The same thought rushed through his mind. Save Wren. Protect her. He wanted to do nothing else. If anything did happen to her, Sky wouldn't ever forgive himself. Somehow, there would have been a way to save her, but he just couldn't make it.No.
No! Don't think about that! That won't happen! Wren is fine, she's safe! Stop!
Sky didn't like thinking about anything about harm, or violence. It just didn't seem right. But come to think of it, had he ever had these thoughts before? Any harmful thoughts before Wren?
But these weren't harmful thoughts. They were protective ones... maybe thinking about them isn't as bad as he'd thought.Sky had never heard himself this indecisive. And, when was the last time he'd seen a snail? Sky pick up his talons, and his eye twitched back and forth, messing with his vision. Or, was that tears? Could he be crying? How? He didn't feel like crying. Perhaps he's tired?
When he put his paw back down, it landed on a grassy patch of the land right next to him. When he tilted his head upwards he hadn't expected, or remembered there to be so many dragons huddled on the island, barely enough wing space.
Why were they so close? Could they scoot away? Please? Are they all staring at him? What are they saying? Do they notice how ugly he may look for crying? I's he crying?
He heard a small squeak from behind him.
Wren.
"Wren?" Sky let out a small sigh. He felt Wren move her small paw to touch his talon, as a form of recognition. He moved his head back and forth, unsure of how to speak to her.
"I don't know if I want to go anymore." He shifted his body away from her, worried she'll get mad. "To Pantala, I mean."
Wren looked back at the other dragons around them. They were now discussing where the next island was, and when we should take off. The black dragon, Moon, pointed a bit more North East from them.
"I know." Wren had two bags under her eyes. She's tired. Had she not gotten any sleep? "I am too." She tilted her head at him. "You think I'm not scared to face more dragons we haven't met? If I speak to them, they'll be so scared they'll eat me!" She chuckled. "Thank goodness I'm only here to communicate with the 'scavengers'. I hope we'll be able to understand each other. Sky still looked somber.
She has sensed that what she said didn't calm him, and started again.
"Hey, we'll get through this together. You know that." She gave him a reassuring look. Though, of course, Sky didn't feel that much better. She's still going to travel to Pantala? If she stated at Pyrriah, and I went along without her instead, would things be better? I'd be so far away from her. She shook his talons suddenly, violently. As if having a spasm.
Wren backed away quickly, letting Sky twitch his claws, along with an emotion of concern.
"You'll be okay, Sky." Wren let out with a calm voice. He already knew that. He's a DRAGON, heading to a continent full of DRAGONS. Non cannibal dragons preferably. Wren is a SCAVENGER heading to DRAGON territory. She's in more danger than he is!Sky let out a whimper, moving his head closer to her hands, and she reached up to pet around his scales.
Would telling her be the most beneficial at this point? If he tells Wren about how he is so afraid of her getting hurt, she'll be thinking out what he'd be thinking, and her whole brain would be clogged with useless and perilous thoughts, then eventually she'll be so concerned with Sky, she'll get herself killed even more than of he didn't tell get at all! It would be best to keep this detail to himself.
"I know." He finally let out.
The green new dragon turned away from Moon, and began to yell instructions to all the dragons on the island.
"We head west, that's where the next continent is. After that, the continent will be right in view." Luna spoke. He heard the big MudWing bellow. "We should be there by now!" His voice sounded deep, and scratchy. Who was this guy? He wasn't giving off any positive vibes, which Sky disliked.
The NightWing looked frustrated, and as if she were about to hurt someone if they wouldn't shut up. She was massaging her temples, which looked as if it soothed her.
She spoke up. "It wouldn't be abnormal if we weren't at Pantala yet. We've barely flown anywhere so far." Moonwatcher groaned, turning back around to try to scan around to see the next island. Sky followed, but he hadn't seen anything whatsoever.
The RainWing beside him turned to look at the large, muddy dragon, clearly thinking of a response. Within a moment he encouraged, "She's right, Bullfrog. I mean, strangely enough. No one besides that weird looking butterfly dragon has ever traveled to Pyrriah from Pantala. Or, the other way around at that."
"Actually--" Luna tried, but the two dragons were now driving deep into the conversation.
"I know! I know! But, why do we have to come anyway? It isn't our fault some queen went rampage over on a different continent!"
"But your queen sent you to help. She clearly thinks you're cut for the job!" The RainWing flapped his wings as he stood on his hind legs, excitedly. He was trying to get Bullfrog to understand, so we can get on with the mission. Right?
Sky let out a frustrated groan. "Let's just get this over with."
"Whoa." Qibli said shocked. "What happened to the little guy?"
Sky whipped his head around to shoot him an aggravated glare.
Moon lowered her talons, and replied, "Right. Let's get going." She raised her wings high, looked from Luna to the rest of them. "Follow us."
