Back to school is a phrase normally thrown around at the beginning of a school year. Plastered in stores and on TV commercials; this phrase not only welcomes and reminds but brings in the sales.
It was eighth grade for Autum as she sat in her chair watching everyone pile into the school. She fiddled with her hands restless in her chair.
"Do you need me to push you into school?" Beth asked, rolling down the car window. Autum just shook her head no. She grabbed her wheels and rolled into school. The laughter and chatter of kids in a new school year was not enough to lift Autum's spirits because as she rolled into the classroom all of it stopped. Autum stopped at a desk and just stared at the chair in front of it. The sound of little feet filled the air.
"Autum right?" the teacher asked, picking up the chair. Autum just nodded yes and pulled up to her desk. The teacher made his rounds and introduced himself to the class. The class was filled with many of names that Autum was familiar with.
"Hey what's with the chair?" Alex asked, tapping her wheelchair. Autum tuned out what she could.
"Don't ask her that," Jackie said, slapping Alex.
"What, I heard she wasn't hurt," Alex said, getting in Jackie's face.
"Hey eyes up here," the teacher said, going over how the year would be. Autum tried to just keep her mind on her work. As books were passed out by the teacher Alex started poking Autum's leg with a pencil. Autum jerked and gave him a mean look.
"I totally saw it move," Alex said, looking around at everyone.
"Hey, that is not ok," the teacher said angrily.
"Come on Autum tell us what's wrong with you," Alex said, pulling on her chair. Autum latched onto Alex's arm and would not let go. Screaming filled her head.
"Autum stop this now!" The teacher yelled trying to pull them apart.
"Get this freak off of me!" Alex yelled. Memories are a fickle thing. Memories are not always as remembered. It is said memories change every time they are remembered. Can you fault someone for remembering something wrong? Maybe the hate and the torment is a bit too much in Autum's memory but can you blame her. For this girl's life hasn't been easy.
As the morning due gave off a fresh smell and the ladybugs stretched their wings the sun was peeked through the trees. Beth got Autum nice and dressed for the day. A white button up shirt over a blue skirt was a simple attire for Autum. Beth rolled Autum to her favorite spot in the middle of the living room and brushed her hair. The sound of the door opening made her turn.
"I'm here as usual," Sunny said with a smile as he waved his hand. Sunny always wore overalls on top of a simple attire of plain colored shirts and jeans. His boots were big and brown. Autum gave a faint smile and turned her chair to face him. "You look really nice Autum," Sunny said as Autum lowered her blushed face. "Oh and you too Ms. Beth," Sunny said, going back outside. Beth fanned her face looking a bit flustered.
"Now he is a handsome man. You better make your move before he gets away," Beth said, straightening out her outfit. Autum gave Beth a mean frumpy look. Beth always wore a dress everyday, some with sleeves or some sleeveless and a white apron laying over her plump body. "Don't look at me like that I would never destroy your happiness, but a girl could dream right?" Autum sank in her chair as Beth went to start breakfast. Sunny made his way inside and walked to the kitchen to wash his hands. Autum rolled close to his path and watched as Sunny walked right by her to the back door. As he pulled the door open he stopped and looked back to see her watching him.
"Autum would you like to come outside with me?" he asked with a confused smile. She just nodded yes and started pushing her wheels only for Sunny to move behind her and push her outside with him.
