And he awoke. Just like everyday Sunny pulled himself from the couch. He pulled his blankets and pillows together making it look neat and turned off a repeating alarm. He ran his hands through his hair as he looked in the mirror. He splashed water on his face before brushing his teeth. He pulled on his face as he dragged himself to Ash's room. Her room wasn't always the cleanest so it was not uncommon for Sunny to have to watch where he walked, but this time he almost tripped on something big. Right below the bed was their mother wrapped in a blanket.
"Come on, it's time for school," Sunny said, shaking Ash as she rolled over moaning. Sunny then turned his attention to the lump on the floor. "Come on let's get you to bed." Sunny pulled his mom to her feet as Ash crawled out of bed. His intention was to drag her to the couch but she quickly crawled into Ash's bed.
"She can sleep there," Ash said walking back into the room with a toothbrush in her mouth. Sunny just gave her a faint smile before she walked back to the bathroom and Sunny turned back to the mess around him. He sifted through it to bring together a nice outfit for school. Sunny set the clothes on the bathroom counter for Ash. All he had left to do was get ready himself. It didn't take long before he was ready for work. As mundane as it was it couldn't be all snores. Ash danced, throwing her feet forward kinda like a cowboy as she left the bathroom dressed.
"What are you supposed to be?" Sunny asked, laughing a bit, grabbing her backpack.
"I'm a square dancer," Ash said, stomping down as she pulled up finger guns.
"Well square dance into the car we need to get going," Sunny said tossing her backpack.
It didn't take long before they were in the car. Sunny had the radio on low as his eyes focused on the cars ahead. Ash just kept to herself in the back seat until she didn't.
"Are you gonna get married?" Sunny rocked the car a bit as this question left Ash's lips.
"What are you asking exactly?" Sunny seemed a bit overwhelmed by her question.
"Married, because people in love always get married right?" Sunny stopped to think about this for a moment until a honk brought his foot back on the gas. The word love floated around in his head.
"Not all the time, and who said we were in love? Did Autum say something?" Sunny got a bit nervous as he looked back at Ash who was quiet for a moment.
"No, I just thought you guys were in love."
"Well love is complicated and you can't just ask someone if they are in love." Sunny seemed to have walked into this one.
"Are you in love?" The car became quiet. Sunny did not know what to say. When he thought of Autum and the word love it was all good thoughts but nothing explosive like he thought there would be.
"I plead the fifth." Sunny kept his mouth shut for the rest of the ride. As they pulled up to the school Ash reached for her bag tossed behind the seats.
"Hey are these school books?" Ash asked, pulling out an American history book amongst others.
"Don't worry about those," Sunny said, reaching back and taking them from her. "Have a good day at school." Ash seemed sick of being kept out of the loop but did not let a frown take her smile away and leaped out the car.
Sunny sat there for a moment lost in thought before driving out of the parking lot. He tried to keep his mind on the here and now, but Ash's words got to him. It would be easy to describe the thoughts going on in his head but I think you get the picture.
When Sunny pulled up to work he pulled his foldable lawn mower out of the bed of his truck and pulled it around back. He tried to focus on his work but that would seem impossible because as soon as he unfolded the mower a voice called out.
