(Feels weird to be writing the last chapter, and its a long one. Brace yourselves. And I'm mixing up Cavern's pronouns because I can so just keep that in mind when reading about them)
As Meltwater said, she was completely gone by the time Spittlebug and the boys got home. It was like she had never lived there at all. It was quite relaxing the first few days. Eventually, her life got into a normal routine. A few months later, she found a RainWing who she liked. They dated for about a year and a half, and Spittlebug got to experience a real, genuine relationship with someone she actually liked, but eventually, the two broke up.
Cavern finally realized she liked boys, and later came out as bisexual to her, something Spittlebug, of course, accepted. She got to know Wingspan a little better, and, with a push from Spittlebug, asked him out, which he accepted.
Meanwhile, Spittlebug heard through the grapevine that Meltwater and Soulcrusher had started a relationship very shortly after their almost marriage, and even quicker that Meltwater was with egg. Being a small town, Spittlebug heard all the news. Meltwater had laid her egg, it finally hatched, it was a girl who she named Icebreaker, Meltwater had broken up with Soulcrusher. Spittlebug had run into Meltwater and her daughter a few times around town. All until years later, a SkyWing prince got a tattoo done at her shop and told everyone about it. Suddenly, their shop was bursting with new clients. Her and Skink opened up a new, much larger shop in a more well-known city and Spittlebug didn't hear from her ever again. That was about 10 years after her and Meltwater broke up.
Meanwhile, Cavern's teen romance didn't last into their adulthood, and they and Wingspan broke up. Earthshaker had made it big with sports, getting into a well known university and starting a relationship with one of his teammates, a sweet SeaWing. Spittlebug liked her, and the two seemed perfect for each other. Cavern eventually found a girlfriend, a NightWing who had recently moved to the town. They got married, and the dragonets came rolling in. Five, in total.
Spittlebug had gone on the occasional date in the last few years, but no new relationships had sprung up, until she met her soulmate, a SandWing SkyWing hybrid. She was all SandWing except for her pink frill and SkyWing head shape. The two were perfect for each other, and quickly got married.
Earthshaker also got married to the SeaWing, and they had a single son, as they only wanted one dragonet. The MudWing NightWing dragon had gotten quite wealthy in his Tailball career, as did his wife, and they had made names for each other, moving out of town to a better known city. Cavern had also moved out of town to the Rainforest with his wife, leaving Spittlebug in the town by herself. Well, she wasn't by herself, she had her wife and a group of friends.
And speaking of friends, most of Meltwaters "friends" weren't doing very well. Avian and Mildew had died before Meltwater had even left the town. Jujube had stayed, and had been kicked out of the old house, as the town was making way for better housing. He was now homeless, still working the same bartending job. Spittlebug wasn't too sure about the others in the house. She didn't know them before, and they seemed to have disappeared when they were kicked out.
Eventually, Cavern and Earthshaker's dragonets grew up and had dragonets of their own, and those dragonets had dragonets. Cavern got a divorce from her NightWing wife, and moved back into Spittlebug's house for a while, helping with the farm, which was doing great. He eventually met a male LeafWing who had moved to the town to get a fresh start, and Cavern moved in with him after a while. The two seemed happy together. Earthshaker stayed with his SeaWing wife all this time.
And then, Spittlebug's wife suffered a heart attack and passed away. It was a devastating loss for her, but Cavern helped her get through it.
And that lead to where Spittlebug was now, 54 years after her and Meltwater had broken up.
Spittlebug sat on the couch, reading a book. Two of her great great granddaughters played on the rug in front of the couch, as one of Cavern's grandkids, Spittlebug's great grandson had decided to visit, and had brought his two daughters with him. Spittlebug liked to spoil whatever grandkids came for a visit, no matter their age.
"Les go outside!" one dragonet pointed out the door to the fields, the other followed nodded.
"Just don't trample any of my crops," Spittlebug smiled at them, opening the door. The two had a grand time chasing each other around in the fields.
Suddenly, a knock sounded at the front door. Her great grandson got up and opened it.
"Oh, I'm sorry, she must have moved. By a long shot, do you know where Spittlebug the HiveWing went?" a familiar voice asked. One the orange HiveWing thought she would never hear again. She got up, and there was, a familiar, though more wrinkled, blue snout looked into the house, before locking eyes with her. Meltwater was back.
"Oh, hi. Can I come in?" she asked politely.
"Uh, sure," Spittlebug replied, still shocked. What could Meltwater possibly want? She looked different, her spiky purple jewelry was gone, replaced with a wove bracelet made from blades of bluish grass, and two silver, heart-shaped earrings, one in each ear, with a matching necklace.
"So, how's life been treating you?" The blue dragon replied awkwardly. Then, seeing her ex's "why are you here" look, she got to the point. "Okay, I just came to apologize for the way I acted when I was younger. The truth is, nowadays, I often look back at our relationship, and realize I was a HUGE jerk, and an idiot. You treated me with kindness, and I chose to be a horrible dragon. It's been eating me up inside for years now. I just had to get it off my chest. I'm so sorry, and I hope you can forgive me."
Meltwater looked close to tears. Spittlebug placed one of her wings on her back and led her to the couch. "Its okay, I forgive you. You were different back then, and you coming here to apologize shows you've grown as a dragon. Also, life has been treating me pretty alright. How about you?"
The two ladies spent the next while recounting their lives until that point. Apparently, after moving, Meltwater had run her new shop with Skink and other artists they hired. She had gotten into a huge argument with Icebreaker one day, Meltwater didn't say what it was about, and she walked away, and Meltwater never heard from her again. She had had three more kids, two with an IceWing, and one with a RainWing NightWing hybrid. She had also had an egg with a MudWing, but it hadn't hatched. She had made friends, lost them, and, after several fights with one of her kids, realized how big of a jerk she was being. After that, she sold her half of the shop to Skink, and had decided to work on herself. Skink, it turns out had dated around, and had landed himself a husband, a SandWing, who he shared very similar interests with. They had adopted a few dragonets together. He and Meltwater were still friends to this day. After, she went to see a therapist, and that helped. And now she was here.
"Well, I'm glad you forgive me," Meltwater said after her life's story. "And I'm sorry about your wife."
"Its okay," Spittlebug assured her. "I hope, now that you've changed, that we can maybe be friends."
"As long as we don't get into another relationship where we think the other likes us but they don't," Meltwater giggled, "Then, yes. I'd love to be friends,"
