You closed your book and set it to the side, eyes glancing over to the empty half of the bed beside yourself. Felix was supposed to have been done working an hour ago.... What on earth was he doing?
Your fingers fidgeted with the edge of the blanket for a few moments before pulling it back and swinging your legs over the side of the bed. Maybe he just hadn't looked at the time for a while. Maybe he got caught up.
You shuffled out into the hall, arms folding across your chest to keep warm as you hurried across the cold wood floor. His office sat near the end of the darkened hall, door cracked slightly and allowing a thin beam of light to streak across the floor. Felix never kept the door open.
You cautiously pressed onward until your hand came to rest against the cool surface of the door. You paused for a moment, not yet pushing it open but taking a moment to peek in. You could make out Felix sitting at his desk, back hunched with his elbows resting on its surface and his face pressed into his palms. He was trembling ever so slightly and occasionally his shoulders would heave with quiet sobs that echoed off of the poster covered walls.
He looked so small.
"Felix...?" It felt wrong to disturb him. Turning back around and returning to bed seemed so easy, but you continued forward anyway. You pushed open the door only as much as necessary and slipped inside.
It was suddenly eerily quiet in the room. There was the soft creak of Felix's chair as he shifted and lowered his hands from his face. He turned to the side to grab a tissue and rid of the evidence of his tears, but you were already standing in his way, quick as ever.
It was easy to make out the dampness of his face, the light from the screen of his computer illuminated the trails of his tears, making them shine on his cheeks.
You reached out a hand and he hastily swiveled his chair to the side to face his desk once more. He wiped at his face with the back of a messy sleeve. "h... hey love.... Now's not really the best time- okay?" His voice trembled in his throat. "J- just give me a few minutes to finish up and I'll be right there." He was avoiding your gaze, trembling slightly as he tried to hold himself together.
"Felix...." You could see him visibly tense and you set a hand on his shoulder, beginning to immediately rub slow circles to try and sooth him. "I'm here for you."
It was such a simple sentence, but it had him breaking down into tears once more. Sobs shook through his body, no longer needing to be contained out of fear of waking you.
You gently grabbed the cushioned arm of his office chair and turned him to face you and gladly welcomed the hug he immediately pulled you into. His face pressed into your shoulder and his hands into the small of your back as he held you tight, half afraid you would disappear if he didn't. You could only hold him and whisper soft reassurances to him in the hope they would help even if just the tiniest amount.
It took him a while to calm down. You had long since settled into his lap, fingers now running slowly through his messy locks as his body shuddered gently against your own.
You didn't prod or pester him with questions, only waited until he was ready. You didn't need to wait much longer.
"S- sorry...." He sniffed.
You kissed his temple and his face turned to nuzzle into your neck. His breath tickled. "No need to apologize. We all need to let it out sometimes."
He started to get choked up again, but quickly fought it back down. "It- it's all just so much." His grip on the back of your nightshirt tightened. "I'm constantly letting Jack down- I- fuck why can't I just do things right??" His face pressed harder into your skin and you started to gently scratch your nails over his scalp. It seemed to help calm him, even if just barely.
"You're just one man, Felix," you said softly. "You can only do so much, and as long as you try your best that's what matters. I see how much you overwork yourself as is-," you took his face into his hands and lifted it from your shoulder so you could meet his sorrowful gaze, "you are doing more than enough. Call Jack in the morning and tell him how you feel, he's your friend, he'll understand."
He sniffled loudly and looked away to your fingers as they ran softly along his cheeks. "B- but I-... what if he gets mad?"
You gave his quivering lips a light kiss. "If he does then he isn't a very good friend- he should be grateful for all of the work you put in!"
His frown only grew. "Yeah... I guess...."
"Felix..." you trailed off, tone growing mildly stern. "I can be right here with you during the call, but things won't get better unless you say something."
He fidgeted in his chair, making it creak under your combined weight. "I know... thanks I-," he nervously cleared his throat, "I really appreciate you being here and all," your name rolled off his tongue, accompanied by a kiss which he initiated. It was brief, Felix being too nervous that anything longer would be unappreciated by you.
You smiled softly, heart fluttering at the small display of affection. "Of course, whatever else would I do?"
