Before the Roman car crash...
"Adan Santiago trae tu trasero aquí ahora mismo joven!Nosotros vamos a llegar tarde !" I heard Mom yell from downstairs. (get your ass down here right now young man. We are going to be late.)
Letting out a heavy sigh I looked over myself in my mirror. I chose an all black suit for dinner. I made sure to leave the first few buttons open on my shirt to make it less formal. We had been having dinners with the Romans even before I was born so there was no point in dressing up. But Mom would kill me if she saw me come down in a pair of sweatpants. Especially because tonight is "special", it's the first time we are having dinner with her back.
Her. Not a day went by that she wasn't on my mind. That statement wasn't an exaggeration either, she was my everything. Even at a young age I knew she was my soulmate. We both knew, weither it was romantic or platonic. We both knew we couldn't live life without each other.
When Sage was taken by Elaine it felt like she took part of me too. It felt like I couldn't breathe. Like I spent these past few years with my head under water going through the motions. And when I walked in that classroom and my eyes connected with hers it's was almost like fresh air.
You know when you are swimming and you have a hold your breath contest with your friends. You tried to hold on as long as possible so you can win. But eventually you can't hold on any longer so you go up for air and it is the best thing. Almost feels like being reborn in a way. But then you see that you lost by half a second.
That's what this felt like. I was having a contest with someone, not sure who. But they were testing to see how long I could hold my breath. How long I could last underwater without her. And when I saw her, I finally came up for air. But the way she looked at me, like she didn't remember. It felt like I lost.
I didn't know what to feel when I knew she didn't remember us. All that could really go through my mind was, how? How could she not remember us, remember me? Not a day went by that she didn't cross my mind and I was far from hers.
That's when the anger kicked in. I was angry at her for not remembering. Angry at Elaine for taking my girl away from me. Angry at the mafia for not finding her sooner. Angry at the world for not letting us grow up together. But as soon as my anger came at her it went. Because I know she had no choice in the matter.
If she had a choice she would've grown up with her family, her real family.
I was rudely. Knocked out of my thoughts by Jaden barging into my room. He gave me a smirk before saying. " You better hurry downstair before Mami comes up here. You are about to make her late for being reunited with her favorite child."
"She probably doesn't even remember her." I grumbled out.
"Do you think Mami cares? She loves that girl more than she loves us memories or not." Jaden said before walking out of the room.
I followed him out thinking about what he said. It was true Mom loved Sage with her whole heart. She could never have a girl so Sage was her daughter even if she didn't give birth to her. When Sage was taken it was like she lost a child herself. She tried to be strong for us but we could all she the longing in her eyes for her other child.
When we got downstairs I saw my whole family waiting by the door. Diego, my eldest brother was conversing with my father in the corner. I am sure it was about mafia business seeing as though Diego will be taking over for my father soon, that is if he wants. While my mother was fussing over Miguel's hair. But when she saw me she immediately stopped giving me a scowl.
"Adan Santiago the next time you take that long I will drag you down here myself." Mama said holding my ear.
I groaned in pain holding the hand that was holding ear. "OKAY OKAY MAMI"
She finally let go after saying a few words in Spanish. Once she let go she gave me a bright smile pinching my cheeks. "Oh my baby you look so good."
I looked at my father and brothers with wide eyes silently pleading. But they were all just looking at us with amusement. My dad is the one that came forward and brought my mother into his arm.
"Okay mi amor let's get going yes? We do not want to be late for dinner." He said to her.
"Oh yes of course. I am so excited." She said to him before turning to us. "Lets go boys."
We followed them to the garage where we all piled into the car. Our guards weren't far behind us making sure our family was secure at all times. It only took about twenty five minutes to get to the restaurant we were supposed to be meeting the Romans at.
I wasn't going to lie and say I wasn't nervous because that would be a lie. Even if I saw Sage earlier at school it didn't settle the nerves in my stomach. I was standoffish at school because I didn't know what to do. My best friend, my little emerald didn't remember me and it crushed me. I wasn't just going to sit there and introduce myself all over again, it felt wrong. So I chose to ignore the situation all together. Yes, I understand it wasn't one of my brightest ideas at the time. But can you honestly blame me?
Mom turned around in her seat facing us. "Alright remember just because she might not remember us doesn't mean we dont remember her okay? We show her love but don't smother her too much. Sí?
"Sí" We all responded but I know all of us were thinking the same thing.
'Please take your own advice Mom'
When we got out the car some paparazzi were around snapping pictures. My family was somewhat famous in the business world to help keep up the front for the illegal things. Paparazzi was common when going out for us. But that didn't mean we liked it, they are creepy fuckers.
As soon as we got inside the receptionist led us right to our table. We had a priest section upstairs waiting for us. The table was empty meaning the Romans had yet to come. Which was surprising because it wasn't like them to be late to an event. Even one as casual as a dinner with us. We all sat down at one end of the table to wait for them to show.
"Honey what time did Angelo say to be here?" My mother questioned my dad after twenty minutes of waiting.
"He sai-" but he was cut off by his phone ringing.
"Sí?" My father answered. He listened for a second before he took a sharp inhaled breath.
"¿Por qué me acabo de enterar ahora? En este momento, podrían estar al otro lado del mundo. Reúna a nuestras dos mafias en la base. Los encontramos ahora." He said angrily into the phone. (Why am I just now finding out? They could be halfway across the world right now. Get both of our mafias together at the base. We find them now.)
My mom put her hand onto of my fathers tightly balled fist on the table. Once he hung up she questioned him what was wrong.
"Its the Romans, they were taken."
Shit.
