Jahniqui's POV
How long I stayed that way I truly couldn't tell. I was brought back from my reverie when Leanna slammed some files on my desk. I looked up and she saw my tear stained face.
"Oh my god! What happened?" She exclaimed then asked. Coming around the side of my desk she hugged me and involuntarily I broke down into loud sobs on her shoulder. All she did was caress my back to comfort me until I finally calmed down.
Gathering the little dignity I had left I stared at her. "Am fine. "
"We might not be on good terms but don't you dare lie to me." Bossy as always. Again I prepared myself to lie. Heaving a sigh I told her what happened- the truth. At the end Leanna was ready to attack D'Andre but i'd explained that I was in the wrong and it's my mistake to mend.
She waved her hand in surrender but clearly she wasn't too pleased about it. "So what are these?" I gestured to the files on my desk. "Oh...those are the case files for the Kelly issue." How nice, more work and am not even supposed to be here.
"I heard you and my brother had a rift over me. You know you are in the wrong right?" Just the mention of my brother and Leanna's cheeks transitioned from her usual olive skin color into giant ripe tomatoes. Awe...she's blushing.
She played with her fingers, something she does when her nervousness kicks into high gear. "Yeah I know. I want to apologize but I don't have his number and I'd hate to call his work phone."
"It's okay I can give it you you." I replied. Surprise etched on her face but was quickly replaced by fear. "Don't worry he doesn't bite." When I gave her the number she left my office in a flash.
Shaking my head at her doing, I might as well stay and get some work done. My bet is that my loyal clients have been playing hang man with my head, no doubt. By 5 o'clock I had manage to get through my clientele list and fix my mishaps. Some of them were angry and frustrated but I explained and they understood completely. Weird I know but they did give me a ear full of warnings.
There's just one client left and he was going to be a real pain. Snatching up my office phone I dialed his number. His secretary put me through without a hitch.
"Good evening Mr. Kelly. Am back in town. How about that dinner tonight at 8. Recce's Italian restaurant?"
"Well hello to you too. Straight to the point as always Ms. Valentine?" I could tell he was smirking through the phone.
"That's the best way to go sir. So what do you say to dinner?" He was testing my patience right about now. There was a brief pause before he continued the conversation. "I believe we have a date." And with that the line went dead.
Date? Please...when hell freezes over. I know he'd rather be having dinner with a human possessing a dick and two balls. If you know what I mean....
My phone rang and startled me. I looked at the caller I.D, it's my brother. A devious grin crossed my lips.
"Hello brother."
"Cut the crap. Why'd you hand over my number to that friend of yours?"
He was angry. Uh-huh!!! Somebody is mad. "Dude she must've called to apologize no biggy.""Listen to me, am only going to say this once. I have no interest in talking to her so keep her on the leash. She was very rude, you know I don't tolerate foolishness and forgiving at the snap of the fingers is not in our DNA." His voice faltered through the entire thing and I knew he was lying. He relished the sound of her angelic voice. I decided to tease him.
"Liar. I bet you just loved the sound of her sweet voice in your ear. Didn't you?" Xavier groaned and I knew I got him. I giggled at his torment like an idiot. We talked for a little while longer before saying our goodbyes.
*****
Here I was standing infront of my floor length mirror debating my outfit. You wanna come off as a desperate person? My snobby subconscious sneered.
Am currently clad in a black sequin dress that left my back exposed and fell a few inches above my knees. With red stilettos and a black clutch, I assessed myself in the mirror. Wasn't pleased with the look but before I could change my mind and be late, I added light makeup, mascara and a bright red lipstick.
Outside my door was the cab I called earlier waiting for me. Getting in I gave the address of the restaurant I was dinning with that self-righteous man. At exactly 7:45 p.m. I was entering Recce's Italian restaurant. The atmosphere was serene and filled with the smell of delightful Italian cuisine. God I love this place. It was one of my favorite restaurants in town.
The receptionist caught a glimpse of me and immediately she smiled. Tia was a good friend of mine. Gracefully I walked up to her and chatted for a while before I saw my client rushed through the door. From the looks of it he was exasperated. The source of his distress soon became evident as the paparazzi banged heavily on the glass entrance. His herd of security seem to do their job well seeing that none got passed them.
"My, my!!! Look who got in some attention today. What did you do?" I questioned sarcastically. He replied with a 'don't start' look in my direction. "Okay", I mouthed.
"Well your table is ready if you'd just follow me." Tia spoke up in her professional tone. We did exactly as told seeing that Mr. Kelly was a bit flustered at the moment. He looked drained.
"So what happened back there?" My inquisitive persona just had to ask. He let out a huge puff of breath. "My publicist decided that today would be a good day for me to go public with my lifestyle." There was a slight raise in his voice.
"Oh." My eyes were practically bulging from their sockets right now. "No. Hold on that's gonna be a problem with the case. Why couldn't she hold off until after this mess. Now it's more problem than I would like."
"Trust me I didn't know. Thereby I fired her ass." He stated as the waiter came to take or order. "Listen you're the only one that doesn't judge me because am gay. Which is why I chose you to be on the case." Mr. Kelly continued. Was he serious right now. He chose me and here I was thinking that my boss had done the choosing deed. D'Andre didn't even tell me he just let me blame him. Of God am so screwed.
"I looked over your files and I think I have a pretty solid case building here but now this?" Gesturing to his current situation. He nodded as he sipped on his water. "I know, I know. A mean it's bullshit right."
"Now here is what am going to do. Well take this process one step at a time. This is huge for me. It's a career high and you know that." He nodded again in agreement. "But come to think of it we can use this as an advantage. And just so you know before you make anymore stupid decisions like this please let me know immediately. I am you lawyer for Christ sake." I pointed my finger at him as if to scold him like a child.
