But god damn, was it worth it when you blinked the spots from your vision.
"Well? What'd I tell you?" Keigo clapped a strong palm against your shoulder, grinning widely. You stumbled a pace at the force, your legs feeling like nothing more than jelly at this point.
Despite the sore burn on your legs and the sting of the cold air in your lungs, an astonished expression painted your face.
His eyes excitedly all across yours, taking you in before he eyed the rest of his world around with a look that could only be related to adoration. The feathers of his ruby wings ruffle in the biting breeze that incessantly tugs on your windbreaker layered atop your sweater.
You'd been on flights with Keigo in the city before, but this... this was something completely different.
You were floating high above the world, atop an angry mountain that hadn't given you and easy climb for a single moment. Weaving and stepping over raised tree roots, navigating steep and unrelenting inclines, the rock formations you had to scale, and the loose shale that would shrug you off at any wrong step and slide you back twenty feet.
And yet, here you were, standing on the summit. Clouds floated in sparse herds below you, curling and morphing around mountains in the distance, all around you, as the sun shines down through them to decorate intricacies onto the green-brown valleys of October.
You slowly, tentatively approached the edge with gusts of wind blowing back the hair free from the bottom of your toque. You peered over the drop that plummeted hundreds of feet, decorated with a thick blanket of pine trees at the bottom.
The earthly sounds were so far from you. Nothing could touch you up here. None of your worries or attachments mattered up here, they were nothing to this mountain range of sleeping giants.
The very best thought was that you yourself had gotten up here. Nothing but your regular, quirkless body.
A smile pulled across your face as you brought your hands in front of you, letting the wind thread it's chill through your sweating fingers and across your warm palms.
The crunch of boots on a snow skiff was followed by an amused voice. "How do you feel?" He asked, meeting your shoulder with his as you both stared off the summit and across the mountain range.
Truly, there'd never been a more surreal moment in your life. It took nearly seven hours to climb this thing and up until now, it was the worst experience of your life. But... now it was a defining moment. Something you did, something you proved to yourself.
"Strong." You said with a soft, amazed breath as you stared out into the unimaginable beauty that surrounded you so tenderly.
The man's smirk fell into a soft smile before wordlessly interlocking his fingers with yours. You held his hand tightly, eagerly, and thankfully.
He had pushed you to come, he was so sure you could do it, and encouraged you every step up this mountain. He believed in you in ways that you'd never come to expect from anyone.
You broke into a grin, closing your eyes and taking in the crisp air to fill every crevasse of your lungs. It resembled something of a spiritual reset.
As you continued to breath in the air, another pair of lungs fell into rhythm with you. You peeked over at Keigo who was mimicking your actions, his eyes closed peacefully while he took in the calm that brushes itself through him.
You stare at him a while, committing every aspect of his face to memory under the cool sun. His serene expression, his golden hair held back in an elastic headband, his chest rising and falling in tune with his breathing, the way his mouth quirked upwards the longer you held your eyes on him.
"Whatcha lookin at, Y/n?" He asks smugly while peering down at you from one eye cracked open.
You turned fully towards him with an obvious and sweet smile. "You." Was all you needed to say, as you squeezed his hand a little tighter in yours.
A light pink brushed itself across his cheeks and the tips of his ears. He shrunk down into his fully zipped winderbreaker, hiding his chin and mouth inside while his eyes drifted anywhere but you. "Heh, you're making me blush, Y/n." He chuckled nervously as he squeezed your hand back, his large fingers outmatching yours.
You brought your other hand out to wrap around with his lonely palm, his eyes were wide and flicked back on you. "Thank you for today, Keigo." As the words hung, you tenderly brought both of his hands up to your lips, planting a soft kiss on the knuckles of both hands.
His wings suddenly puffed up.
"Hey, it was my pleasure." He insisted casually, all the while his face was now a bright, burning red.
You grinned at him brightly, swinging both your hands a little. "I wouldn't have done this if it weren't for you. So thank you, truly." Your face warmed while your head bowed down momentarily.
"Well I'm glad you did, the Rockies are no joke." He said, plopping a hand atop your head then roughly rubbing your toque around on your head. "And there's no one else is rather be up here with." The proclamation was a little softer as he meets your eyes.
He stares at you for a moment before inching towards you, his hand slides from the top of your head to cradle the back of your neck. You copy his slow approach of leaning in, a smile ever present on your face.
When only a few centimetres away, he pauses, letting his golden eyes drink you in once more before mirroring your smile and softly pressing his lips to yours.
