"uncle rin????", kousuke returned from the bathroom to find y/n talking to the newcomer.

"who the hell brings a dog to a date?", suna asked as kou sat down on the other side of y/n.

"i-"

"more importantly, who names a dog monkey?", suna asked again

"how do you know?", kou tilted his head

"your mom mentioned it yesterday", he groaned, "she's supposed to be comforting me, not the other way around."

"you were comforting her over the NAME???"

"that and she told me you asked someone out. it's a nice coincidence huh"

it suddenly hit y/n that suna rintarou was going through a divorce right now. how does one deal with something that difficult? she couldn't even imagine it. his soon to be ex wife showed up to her house the other night with-

"hina", she interrupted, making them look at her for context.

"what about hina?", kousuke asked

"oh, we met the other night", she specified

"you know my daughter", suna nodded, "nice"

"i didn't know you two talked", kou raised his eyebrows, "she's an old friend"

"yeah she mentioned it", y/n nodded

suna's eyes flickered with interest, as if he knew something she didn't. and then he discarded the thought without context.

the three of them fell silent as the match started.

kou's hand touched hers, silently asking if he could hold it again. not even a moment later, his fingers were laced with hers and resting in her lap along with monkey.

this certainly felt more date-like.

somewhere suna kind of realised that he was crashing their date so he engaged in conversation with the man to his other side who seemed to be very interested in his inputs. it wasn't enough but it was something.

kou was surprised by how she was voicing her opinion about everyone on court quite openly. he'd never watched or discussed volleyball with her so he didn't really know how interested she was in it.

she was interested enough, apparently.

"how come you don't ever show up to watch nationals?", he asked, "i've never seen you at any of my matches"

"i was at one in our first year", she recalled, "and then... i don't know, i didn't have much time. it's great that you were looking for me though."

"you'll come this year won't you?", he asked, "i'm vice captain this year. it would've been captain if not for that asshole miya."

the mention of miya yoshi seemed to bring back suna rintarou's attention to them.

"kou, call tsumu. he misses you."

"i don't care", kou deadpanned, making y/n turn to him in surprise at the drastic change in tone.

and suna had virtually no reaction. he simply hummed and then looked back ahead.

"sorry, you were saying?", he turned his attention back to his date, who still found it weird that he quite literally knew everyone in pro volleyball.

"by tsumu you mean-"

"sorry about that", he frowned, "more importantly, are you hungry?"

"yes"
