"You ever been high before?"
It was a late fall night in 2014. Theresa and Fez sat alone in Theresa's tiny basement. The walls were covered with Kesha and One Direction posters Theresa had ripped out of magazines. The couch they sat on was comfy but very worn, a staple in every middle-class suburban household. Mac Miller played softly on Theresa's speaker. Her mom was at working night shift, as usual, and wouldn't be home until the next morning. Her dad was away on a camping trip with friends. Jonah was staying overnight at their babysitter's house.
Theresa shook her head no. She had never been high before. She had never even seen weed before. She knew Fez smoked it, with a bunch of his other sophomore friends. As a freshman, Theresa only knew a few kids in her grade that smoked, and she didn't hang out with them.
Fez pulled out a blunt from his pocket. It was small and crumpled, like he was still perfecting how to roll one. Fez turned on the small power fan that sat next to them in the basement. Fez and Theresa had been friends for over 2 years now. Usually, when he came over, they played video games or just sat and talked.
Fez pulled a lighter out of his other pocket and lit the blunt. He took a sharp inhale, and Theresa could see his face relax. She watched him intensely. She had never really realized it before, but she liked him. Like, as more than just a friend. She would never admit it out loud.
He laughed. "Why you lookin at me like that, T?"
Theresa giggled nervously, trying to act normal. "Let me try."
"You absolutely sure?" Fez asked.
Theresa nodded. She grabbed the blunt with care and inhaled. The hot smoke instantly filled her lungs, burning them. She coughed, her eyes watering.
"You good?" he asked with concern. He handed her the water bottle that he had been drinking out of. She took a few long sips, cooling her throat.
"Let me try again." She took another hit, this time a smaller one. She coughed again, but it didn't burn as bad.
"Shit," he laughed. "I'm a bad influence on you. You used to be that innocent lil kid from down the street, chasin down the ice cream truck an shit."
Theresa couldn't take his eyes off of him. She started to feel slightly dizzy, but warm, like the effects of the weed were starting to hit her. "I'm still that kid, lets be real," she laughed. "But maybe I'm a lil too old to chase the ice cream truck anymore."
"You my best friend." Fezco smiled. "And I think you might be high." Theresa burst into laughter, first slowly, then all at once. Fez started laughing too.
Theresa got up and walked over to her speaker a few feet away. She turned the volume all the way up. The Spins, by Mac Miller, was playing. Theresa started dancing, jumping, and singing to the music. "Wanna get a mansion, a jacuzzi, a theater to watch my movies.."
Fezco burst into laughter once again. She looked so goofy and slightly awkward, dancing around in her sweatpants and tank top, high off of two small hits of weed. But at that moment, she looked almost breathtaking to him. They had hung out every week since they first met. And he had never really realized it until now.
"You are so goddamn perfect," Fezco said quietly. Theresa stopped dancing and looked right at him. She blushed intensely. She didn't really talk to many boys at school, much less get complimented by one.
Fez took another long hit off his blunt, the gold chain he always wore glinting in the dim light of the basement. Theresa suddenly felt confident, in herself and her friendship with Fez. Maybe it was the weed. She didn't know, all she knew was that she liked him. She slowly walked over to him and sat on the floor next to him.
"Kiss me," she said softly. Fez smiled softly and their lips met.
