The next day, Theresa sat down at lunch with her friends. It was a chilly Monday morning, and she was feeling as shitty as ever.

"How did things go with Fez?" Cassie asked, biting into her apple.

Theresa sighed. "Fucking Cody of all people showed up to buy some weed from Fez. Literally just my luck."

The girls gasped.

"No wayyyyy," shouted Kat over the loud noise of the lunchroom. "That's fucking wild".

Theresa shook her head. "Oh it gets worse. He literally was grabbing all up on me. Fez told him to chill, and Cody was straight confused. He obviously doesn't know about the past me and Fez have. He was all like, 'dude I'm allowed to touch the girl I'm fucking'. Fezco looked like he was about to fight him, and he told him not to come around any more".

The girls all nodded. "Did you guys work anything out?"

"No. He told me to leave."

Maddy cringed. "That's like the worst possible outcome for this situation. I'm so sorry."

Theresa groaned and rubbed her eyes. "I think I'm cursed or something."

Later at cheer practice, Theresa sat in the grass, stretching out her splits. She could see the soccer team across the field. Cody was finishing up practice and was running suicides with his teammates. After a few minutes, she caught him glancing over at her.

please don't come over here

Theresa saw Cody pick up his water bottle and jog over to her.

"Hey," he said shyly. "So wanna tell me what yesterday was all about?"

Theresa stood up reluctantly. She felt bad. Cody really was a nice kid. She didn't mean to get him caught up in everything.

"Look," she said hesitantly. "Fezco and I have known each other since middle school. We were really close friends, and well, we kinda caught feelings for each other back then. But things didn't really work out between us. Then, last year when I moved schools, we didn't talk at all. Now that I'm back, it's just weird between us."

Cody nodded. "Look I get it," he said. "I had no idea you had a past with him. I wouldn't have acted like that yesterday if I knew. Are you guys talking now?"

Theresa shook her head no. "I mean, I have feelings for him. And I know he cares about me too But he doesn't want to date me. The last time we were together, some shit happened involving him and his drug business. I got involved and I almost got seriously hurt. He doesn't want to hurt me again, and I get it."

Cody stared at the ground, processing what Theresa had just told him.

"I get that too," he said. "Look, I just think you're a really cool girl, you're smart and funny and just, I don't know, chill to be around I guess. I really enjoyed that night we had sex."

Theresa blushed. "Look I'm sorry I got you involved in this drama," she said. "My life has kinda been a little messy since I moved back."

"It's alright," Cody said, taking a sip from his water bottle. Theresa noticed it was blue, with the words UCLA on it.

"Nice water bottle," she said. "I applied to UCLA a few weeks ago. It's pretty much my dream school."

"No way!" Cody exclaimed with a huge grin. "I just got my acceptance letter over the weekend! I'll be playing soccer there, so my mom got me this water bottle as a gift."

Theresa smiled back.

"Look, I gotta get going home," he said. "I'm sorry about all that with Fezco. I'm not gonna buy from him anymore, that dude kinda scares me. Listen, if things don't work out between you two, I'm down to hang again. I really think you're a great girl. You've got a good future ahead of you. You deserve someone who's gonna treat you right, and take care of you."
