Chapter 11

“We are the Wonder 3 C’s! We are the Wonder 3 C’s!” Cooper screams next to me as we walk out of the cafe. “Who are we?! The Wonder 3 C’s!

“Cooper, what are talking about?” Chase grumbles beside me. And with that Cooper stops in the middle of the sidewalk. Motioning for Chase and I to stop and we follow his command. He takes a few steps forward and turns to us.

“We are the Wonder 3 C’s!!! Because all our names, except for Is because his name starts with I, start with C! We are the Wonder 3 C’s! We are the Wonder 3 C’s! And all of the other people are just big fat loooooooooserss! ‘Cause they’re not us!” Cooper begins to sing to the tune of We are The Champions by Queen. Of course speeding up in unneeded places, but it worked. He jumps at the end and puts one arm in the air. He puts up three fingers to make a ‘W’ and turns to away from us and continues walking.

“You’re such a freak!” I yell after him as Chase and I run to catch up with him.

“But you love me!” Cooper says as he throws an arm around me.

“You have issues,” Chase says as he smiles and rolls his eyes. Chase, Cooper, and I had been having weekly coffee since the incident with Liza and Cooper. It made me feel good to have people who didn’t know about my relationship with Eli. I don’t really know what you would call it, but I know it was unhealthy. That’s why I don’t want to talk about it. Cooper would overreact, and I don’t want to deal with that. Then Chase would just get mad. He’s really is a big guy. Since meeting him I’ve learned he works out at least twice a week, but I’m still not sure that he would be able to hold his own against Eli. I’ve been on the bad end of his violence and I don’t want to see Chase against that.

I look down at my watch and sigh. It’s already 1:30.

“What’s wrong, Sandy?” Cooper asks me leaning on me.

“It’s, um, getting late,” I say nervously.

“Cassie, it’s only,” Chase pauses to pull out his iPhone 5, “1:32.”

“I know,” I say looking down.

“Why do you keep running off so early?” Cooper ask me.

“This is the third time you’ve left before 3…”Chase says beside me, trailing off as he thinks.

“I know, and I’m really sorry…it’s just Liza has dance rehearsals…” I lie to them.

“You know, last week you said she had soccer practice. I checked, and it’s not even in season,” Chase says beside me.

Chase was too smart for his own good. He was starting to notice things and take notes on it. Yesterday he called me, and when I suddenly ended a call, he became even more suspicious. Eli was starting to come home a lot earlier. Usually he was home at, at least 4:30. Last time I hung out with Chase and Cooper, I only beat him home by mere minutes.

“Listen, there is an hour and a half until 3:00. Why don’t we go to the park and just relax for a little while?” Chase tells me. It was still deep in February and a cold wind blew. So I took a drink of the warm coffee from the medium cup.
