As a lot of you guys might know already, the Kaeluc problem is one of the top controversial topics in this community. It really shouldn't be though lmao (just like a lot of other fictional stuff). It's only a problem because people (especially Americans) are refusing to believe others' explanations.

Because some ideas in Chinese culture can't be applied to the Western cultures, the English team reworked some things to make it fit to the cultural differences. In the case of Kaeya and Diluc's relationship, the original Chinese text refers to them as "sworn brothers" which means men who aren't blood-related who swore to be loyal to each other, to protect each, basically to be there for each other. So this means their relationship isn't strictly family and one can interpret them to be either romantic or platonic.

Though I think the translator(s) shouldn't have done that. They could've easily said "sworn brother" which will be consistent with Chinese culture. People can easily read up on what the term means through people who know what the term means (from some of the top searches online, some of the sources definitely aren't giving an accurate explanation). Or better yet the accurate definition of "sworn brother" can be shown as a pop up message.

So no, sworn brothers doesn't mean step brothers or adopted brothers. No it also doesn't mean men who swore to be brothers. I love it when people try to still find arguments on why "kaeluc is incest and illegal" only because the sworn brother idea doesn't make sense to them, because it doesn't apply to them, or because it makes them uncomfortable and they don't find it morally right.

Ok they might be sworn brothers whatever but that still makes them step brothers because they're swearing to be brothers-

Kaeya literally grew up with him which means he was adopted into the family. So they're adopted brothers still. Doesn't change the fact that they're still brothers in some way

Irl if someone joins into the family and is raised by the parents, that makes them brothers. Doesn't matter if that person is a friend. Still brothers.

The English team referred to them as brothers and used words like "adopted brother" and such which is exactly the main reason why people lose their shits when they see someone shipping Kaeluc. Yeah Kaeya was brought into the home and basically grew up with Diluc, but that's it.

Btw I know in the Genshin Webtoon in one of the chapters, Kaeya says in the English translation: "Diluc and I are like brothers". The key word here is "like". Like doesn't mean "yes it's canon we're blood-related or adopted brothers". They see each other as close and compare it to the close connection of siblings. You as the reader can see it as them being siblings and that's cool. But it definitely doesn't mean they're 100% blood brothers, adopted brothers, step brothers, whatever. No need to take everything literally. Either way, their relationship is mistranslated. Just wanted to mention this bc that chapter was one of the arguments against Kaeluc. A lot of Westerners take things word for word and literally as is.

I was scrolling and found this one Kaeluc fan art and the comments got so bad that the artist had to mute her comments since people were sending her death threats.

To end this chapter.... if you want to view Kaeya and Diluc as brothers, go for it. Much of the West doesn't have the idea of sworn sibling. If viewing them as brothers makes you comfortable or you just like that, then awesome. At least recognize the canon lore and their relationship - don't just pretend the Chinese text doesn't exist and then say things like "whatever you say isn't valid idc if it's canon", "still makes me uncomfy so they're canonically bros", etc.

Don't go around and harass, bully, send death threats, or accuse other people of being an "incest lover". If seeing fan art or seeing people talk about them in a sworn brotherly way makes you uncomfortable, just block them or ignore and scroll away instead of leaving your hatred and trying to convince those people that the right answer is them being brothers.

What are other mistranslations/differences you know of? And how do you interpret Kaeya and Diluc's relationship? Well, I view them as sworn brothers because I learned of their actual r/s in the original Chinese text and know of the sworn sibling concept.
