Yun Jin is a character (I'm pretty sure the only playable character atm) who has two voice actors for the dubbed voiceovers. To retain the Chinese culture with its opera, Mihoyo kept her singing VA the same for all the dubbed voiceovers. So, for example, this means players using the English dubbed will hear her suddenly switch to singing in Chinese.
Let me get this out of the way and say that it's cool if people don't like the opera singing. It's especially natural to have that reaction since the opera singing is something unfamiliar and new. And for a lot of people, when they see something unfamiliar and new, they have a negative reaction to it. Although I didn't react negatively, the opera singing was really new and I've never heard of anything like it before. What's not okay is when people say racist things and rudely mock the singing.
im cRyIng at the weird singing... why she built like that tho 🤡 she's so dramatic and obvi exaggerating the singing
pov : you think you're good at singing when you're really not
LOL is this Japanese or sum?? It's so funny STOP 😭
bruH ion wanna hear no ching chong chang music! where the english singing at tho?? this is SHIT
^ I mean, seriously? It's 2022 and people are STILL referring to Asians and anything Asian-related to be "ching chong". How brain dead can they be? Lmao.
Many people also complained about her stiff movements and weird pauses throughout the scenes. Upon reading through some articles and comments, the reason for those movements and pauses is because that's how the Chinese performers move on stage.
Although there were a ton of people who reacted in really negative ways to the opera singing, there were many other people who shared how they wanted to research more about Chinese operas and asked Chinese people for recommendations of other operas. This is great news and it makes me happy to see people showing an interest in something new and different. But what makes me even happier is the fact that Mihoyo actually put something into the game that's a part of Chinese culture and is new to many people.
To end on a good note, I'll talk a bit about Yun Jin's design and my own thoughts on her singing. I read an article that mentions how everything about her design like her large headpiece is inspired from what actual Chinese opera performers would wear on stage. I love her design a lot and think it's so beautiful. Her character colors are so appealing too.
What did you think of Yun Jin's opera singing? I love it a lot and actually teared up while watching it. The scenes with her singing was really impactful.
