<<<CASEY>>>

A few days passed, much the same as the last, except we didn't go to Miles' house.

As quietly as I could, I tiptoed up behind him. He was sitting at our lunch table, and I had just shown up, deciding to scare him. Luckily, the racket of the cafeteria masked my not so quiet footsteps.

"Boo!" I yelled suddenly, grabbing Miles' shoulders.

He spun and launched his fist into my face. I stumbled back a few steps, not expecting the hit. Damn, he can hit hard. It hurt.

Miles finally realized who he had punched, and his face noticeably concerned.

He stepped towards me hesitantly, "sorry, I . . . uh, reflexes." He seemed unsure how to act.

I half laughed, half whimpered in pain.

"Lets . . . lets go to the nurses office." He picked up his bag and walked out, gesturing for me to follow.

When we got there, my eye was starting to swell up.

The nurse lady came over and looked at me, before leading me over to a chair. "What happened?" she asked

I looked at Miles, seeing if he would answer. "I accidentally punched him in the face."

The nurse nodded as if it was nothing out of the ordinary, "I'll get you some ice, ok?"

I nodded and she left somewhere. Miles glanced at me,"you . . . alright?"

"I'm good. I guess no more jumpscares, right?"

"Unless you want two black eyes, I don't suggest you do that." he crouched down in front of where I had sat down, taking a good look at my eye. And then . . . he poked it.

"Oww! Hey, why'd you do that?!" I exclaimed, my hand flying to cover my eye from any further attacks.

He shrugged, a small grin creeping onto his face. I'd let him poke my black eye all he wanted if I could see it again.

The nurse lady came back, a baggie of ice in hand. She gave it to me, and told me to put it to my face and come back if I need to get more when it melts.

"Hey Miles?" I asked suddenly as we walked down the hallway.

"Hmm?"

"Can we go to your house to work on the book thing again?"

"Sure," he nodded.

It was silent for a while until I suddenly thought of something, and jumped in front of Miles to stop him. "Miles! I just figured something out!"

He looked down at me, the slightest amused sparkle in his eyes. "What?"

"Well . . ." I paused dramatically for effect, then said, "if you put an S in front of your name, it spells smiles!"

He looked like a mixture of confused and amused. The tiniest smile on his lips as he shook his head.

And right then and there, I vowed to make him smile, an actual big smile. He walked past me, now with his neutral face back on.

"Hey miles." he looked back at me as I started walking again, "what did the worm say to the caterpillar?"

Seeming hesitant, Miles asked, ". . .what?"

"Where'd you get that furry coat!?" I laughed at my own bad joke, and Miles kept his straight face.

"Hmm . . ." I hummed as I tried to think of another one. "Why is nine afraid of seven?"

He nodded, "cause seven ate nine. Already heard that one."

And so I continued to tell him bad jokes all the way to class, which we shared. We were able to take our sweet time because lunch still had some time left.

I got to see that beautiful smile only once more, and just barely caught a glimpse of it, but I loved it. And I sooo wanted to see it again... or maybe kiss it...

Wait.

Back up.

Back. The. Fuck. Up.

What?

. . . kiss?

Oh shit.
