"married," louis' face falters. "no. no, no, no-"

he closes the lid to mitch's laptop and backs up until his back hits the wall. his eyes don't move from the electronic on the table. in fact, they water at the thought of being legally bound to his abuser even if the man is dead.

"not," mitch assures, "you're not. anymore."

"but i was," louis' chest tightens. "how the fuck? i don't- i would never," he looks at the two men across the room with wide eyes. "i would never."

"oh, i believe you," the boss crosses his arms.

"why did you do a background check on me?"

"uh...i did a little favor for you and it was brought to my attention. next question," mitch purses his lips. "legally speaking, you're a widow, lou. a widow to a very high known boss."

"is there a ring on my finger?" louis holds his hand up.

"no."

"there you have it. i'm not married, nor would i ever be, to that piece of shit. i don't ever remember agreeing to a marriage or signing anything," louis lowers his hand and slides down the wall until he lands on the floor, putting his head on his bent knees. he takes a deep breath and asks, "when?"

"and you have no recollection of anything of this sort?"

louis shakes his head.

"he couldn't have possibly tricked you into signing-"

"mitch, he said no," harry says lowly, "the answer is no."

louis lays his head on harry's shoulder and closes his eyes. "i think 'm gonna be sick."

mitch slides the trash can towards them in case he does get sickly and sighs.

"i couldn't do one on him because i would have to send in paperwork explaining why i need a dead man's criminal background..." mitch sits in the floor across from the boy. "obviously your name has not changed because it's costly to change it. you'd have to edit all of your bills and get a new social security card, new license, all that. but the license is in the system. someway, somehow, it got approved."

"shit's fucking crazy," louis gulps. "can...can i see it again?"

the boss gladly re-opens his laptop and pulls everything back up. their printed names, their signatures-
