Maya's POV

Christmas was never a massive thing in my family growing up, for starters my mom couldn't afford presents and my dad left to be with a new family. My best friend Riley's family however went all out at Christmas; massive get-togethers, parties, a whole store's worth of food, laughing, hot chocolate, movies and music. Riley always made me feel included in those celebrations but I never felt apart of them, just a spectator. Until last Christmas.

Last Christmas I finally discovered what it felt like to truly fall in love with the spirit of the Christmas; I wore Christmas sweaters, played festival songs on my guitar, drank ridiculous amounts of hot chocolate, laughed honestly at the Matthews' family parties and helped cook all the delicious food with Topanga and Amy.

Although I soon fell out if love with Christmas just as fast. It reminded me of too many things involving a certain male brunette member of Riley's family. Riley knew this yet somehow I was stood in her childhood bedroom at the Matthews' loft on Christmas Eve trying to get the creases out of my red dress. Despite us being 19 now her room looked exactly the same as it ever has done.

I had decided to wear a sweater dress that had long sleeves and went down to just above my knee then paired it with some tights that matched my skin colour and black dm boots. For my hair I straightened it all and left it down and the only makeup I wore was eyeliner, mascara and red lipstick that matched perfectly with my dress.

"Woah, my best friend is stunning." I smiled watching Riley enter the room eating a milk chocolate lolly as if she was still 6 years old.

"Why thank you, but you look stunning yourself Riles." I smiled and tidied up my things on her desk. Riley put on some Christmas music and started dancing and managed to make me join it. I almost genuinely smiled til I heard his voice.

"Ma brother, merry Christmas!" My heart dropped into my stomach and my arms crossed over my chest.

"C'mon." Riley took my hand and lead me through to the living room. Thankfully it was getting busy with our family and friends at this point so as she walked over to her boyfriend, i sneaked away and got myself a vodka-coke.

"Still a little young for that don't you think?" Josh came up behind me and took the red paper cup out of my hand and finished the drink in one gulp, his biceps flexing as he lifted his arm. I'd be so turned on right now if it wasn't for the way he ended things and the fact he brought up my age in a negative way... Again. I just huffed and turned to poor another one. "Maya-"

"No." I whispered shouted so only he could hear me, "you don't get to impact my life decisions anymore. You hurt me." I admitted. His face dropped and he start to rub the knuckles on my hand with his thumb and stupid me didn't hit his hand away.

"Please." His voice broke as if his eyes were going to tear up. That almost made mine copy.

"At New Years every piece of happiness I had throughout December disappeared when you said we shouldn't add labels cause you were leaving. I gave you my complete everything and all you gave me back was the news you were leaving to work in Florida for 6 months and said I couldn't come with you. It broke me Josh." Before I could let him speak my feet were moving quickly and leading me back towards Riley's room.

"Maya-" He followed me and I stopped on the little step past the dining table not wanting to create more of a scene than there already was.

"Maya?" Riley came up to us.

"Not now Riley." I shook my head putting my hands over my face.

"You're about to break the rules of Christmas." I briefly looked at Josh then back at her feeling confused. "Look." She pointed up them walked away. Mistletoe.

My eyes teared up so I shut them trying to trap the tears but it was no use. Before I could open them I felt his lips on mine. I hadn't felt this in a year so of course I kissed back, and I was the one to deepen it. I finally let my head overcome my heart and pulled back then ran to Riley's room.

"You know I wrote to you every single day I was away." I looked up at him from my spot in the bay window to see him shutting the door. "Didn't you get my letters?" I shook my head. He held out his hand for me to take which I reluctantly did and he guided me towards the guest room, as known as his room when he's in town. "Look." He brought out a little treasure chest from under the bed that had a padlock on it and the key was under his watch face.

"Josh-" I gasped but he interrupted me.

"Here's a copy of all the letters, a leaf from the ski lodge, my favourite beanie that you used to steal; it never looked the same way on me after you wore it." He took a deep breath and continued, "the tickets to the baseball game we went to together, the memory card from summer we all went up to Shawn's cabin, all the polaroid photos we took together and the necklace I gave you." My breath hitched.

"I threw this off the roof that night we ended it, how do you have it?"

"After you ran off I ran downstairs and spent 4 hours looking for it." He looked down.

"You're back for good? You're not leaving again?" I asked quietly making him nod. I gently leaned forward and stroked his cheek with one hand and connected our lips together in a passionate kiss we had both been longing for.

After kissing for a few minutes we both reluctantly pulled away from each other both craving oxygen. That's when I noticed a small container in the chest still, "what's that?" I pointed.

"This?" He pulled it out and opened it, "it's the mistletoe that we shared our first kiss under." My heart began racing as he held it up and kissed me again. I pulled away smiling and turned around and moved my hair. He got the hint and put the necklace back on me. "I love you Maya."

"I love you Josh." I smiled turning around to face him. A few seconds later we heard the distant cheers of our family members wishing one another a 'Merry Christmas'. Josh looked at his watch and sure it was midnight.

"Merry Christmas Boing." I smirked.

"Merry Christmas gorgeous." He gave me a soft kiss then pulled me into his arms and I hugged him so tight, not wanting this moment to ever end.

Maybe Christmas isn't so bad after all?
