Maybe This Christmas

Maya's POV

I always knew the holidays were going to be kind of tough this year, I just underestimated how hard. I thought maybe this christmas it would be different.

I smiled and felt tears form in my eyes as I stared down at the Christmas card that had came this morning. It was from Riley and Lucas and had a photo of them and their 2 little ones on the front of it.

I hadn't properly spoke to Riley in 3 years - we never fell out, just drifted because of college. She went to college in Texas with Lucas, I went to NYU.

They ended up staying there as they had bought an apartment and got married 2nd year of college, and Riley got pregnant not long after. But that was 4 years ago.

It's true what they say. When a friend gets married and has a kid, they drift from their single friends. They loved their daughter, Lizzie, so much than 18 months later Riles gave birth to their baby boy, Milo. They really were the perfect family.

My parents went to Florida nearly every vacation and ended up moving there 2 years ago. They offered for me to come when them but I had just finished college and got offered a really good job as a set and costume designer on Broadway. It wasn't the job I ever pictured myself doing but I really enjoyed it and I got to work with some of the most incredible people.

I lived in a small studio apartment as Uptown Manhatten rent was expensive.

I barely was in contact with anyone these days. Farkle and Smackle moved to Holland for some science stuff - I didn't remember all the technical terms. Zay got back together with his high-school sweetheart Vanessa and moved back to Texas as well, but a different side to the state as Riley and Lucas.

I even had a boyfriend. Tommy. He was sweet but we just weren't meant to be. We did spend a good couple years together. We met through college but he was from Utah and he was moving back when his course ended. It was a mutual break up, and we no longer stay in contact. He was also always convinced I didn't love him as much as he loved me.

I barely speak to Cory and Topanga. I visit maybe once a month but it wasn't the same with Riley.

It was December 24th. Christmas Eve.

Snow was really bad in New York so I couldn't fly out to be with my parents, Cory, Topanga and Auggie left last to spend Christmas with Riley, Lucas and their kids.

Meaning I was alone for Christmas.

All my work friends either had plans or were working. It wasn't the first time in my life I was alone and I know it won't be the last.

I decided to suck it up and go to a walk around and possibly get myself some festive donuts at the corner shop near my apartment.

New York has a reputation of being slight dodgy and have lots of muggings - which I just happened to be a victim of tonight.

"Hey, stop that! Let go!" I yelled causing a scene as someone wearing all black started an unwanted tug-of-war match with my bag.

He didn't reply, just grunted and kept pulling.

"Let go!" I repeated myself.

"She said let go." Suddenly I had help pulling on my bag. The guy eventually let go and walked away.

I signed and started to turn around, "thank you so much, how can I- Josh?" I looked up at him in disbelief.

"Hi Maya."

Joshua Matthews. My first love. Unfortunately we never had our someday, we weren't really in each others lives when I turned 18, then we both had been seeing other people, which was apart of our deal.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him.

"I came out to get a hot chocolate. I was meant to leave for Philly yesterday but the snow had other plans." He chuckled. I shivered. "Maya, you're freezing, you should get inside." I love that he cared.

"Yeah, well clearly you have yet to buy a hot chocolate and lucky for you I happen to make the best." I smiled.

"Well lead the way gorgeous." He smiled at me and I lead the way to my apartment.

We got in and I locked the door and threw the keys on the coffee table.

"So, hot chocolate? I have marshmallows." I smiled.

"That'd be great. I can help if you want." He started walking towards me.

"No, it's okay. Sit." I pointed to the stool at the counter. He did so and started looking around.

"Nice place you have here."

"Thank you." I quickly made his hot chocolate then passed it to him.

"Thanks," he took a sip. "Wow you weren't lying when you said you make the best." I chuckled.

We walked over and sat on the sofa and just sat there for a while in comfortable silence.

"Do you want to watch something?" I suggested.

"Sure, you pick." He smiled making me feel like that 14 year old girl who fell in love with him.

I was lost for words so just nodded and put on Elf.

We sat in silence, apart from the occasional laugh from one of us, and watched the movie.

We were at the snowball scene when the TV turned itself off, not long after the lights.

"Josh-"

"I'm here." I felt him grab my hand.

Anyone that knew me knew I wasn't a big fan of the dark - it always made my mind overthink everything that happened with Kermit and all the arguments. Josh and Riley especially knew this fact about me.

"There's not been a blackout since I moved out, well, there was one but it was through the day and it was 'cause power lines were getting changed."

"I'm not going anywhere until and lights come back on, okay?" He squeezed my hand tighter for reassurance.

I nodded and went over to the window where very little day light was coming through.

"The snow is getting heavy again." I observed out loud.

"Oh god, the roads look awful." Josh came over and stood beside me.

"What are your plans for Christmas?" I asked him to change the subject as I moved to the cupboard to retrieve a couple candles and a lighter.

"You know, Chinese takeout in my apartment alone." He laughed lightly. I knew how important spending the holidays with his family were, but unfortunately I couldn't do anything about that. I lit the candles and moved back to standing by Josh, making sure they were safe first.

"Well you're spending it with me, although, we're getting Mexican, not Chinese."

"Still love tacos?"

"Of course." I smirked. "So you're staying over?"

"Only if you want me too." He places both his hands on my hips.

"I do." I placed my hands around his neck. "I'll need you to distract me from the blackout." I reached up and placed my lips on his.

The kiss got pretty heated pretty fast.

I pushed him back onto the sofa and straddled his lap.

"Wait, Maya." He reluctantly moved back, "this got fast quick."

"I've been waiting to do that for 10 years, what did you expect." He laughed and shook his head as he leaned back down to kiss me.

We fooled around for probably about 3 hours, not going all the way or anything like, mainly just kissing.

We were lying in my bed and I was snuggled up in fluffy Christmas pajamas against his bare chest.

The clock next to my bed started flashing which signaled the power was back. The clock flashed midnight.

"Merry Christmas gorgeous." Josh smiled down at me.

"Merry Christmas Boing." I smirked and leaned up to press my lips to his, then falling asleep feeling the happiest I had ever felt in a long time.
