Smart With Love

A/N: I love Mean Girls and I obviously love Sabrina and her being in it makes me so happy so this kind of inspired this oneshot - hope you enjoy!

Maya's POV

Why did I think auditioning for NYU's end of year musical would be a good idea? I'm beyond nervous to go on stage especially since I'm playing one of the principle roles.

During the last year of high school I discovered how much I love singing so when I came to NYU I decided to study art as well as the performing arts.

This year NYU were putting on Mean Girls: The Musical and I was playing Cady Heron - and Joshua Gabriel Matthews just happened to be playing my Aaron Samuels. Therefore not only was I nervous to perform in front of a lot of people, I had to kiss Josh in front of a lot of people. It's not that I didn't want to kiss him, believe me I did, but we've never kissed and I didn't want our first kiss to be in front of our friends, our families, our classmates and a bunch of strangers.

"Nervous?" A girl called Allie asked me as she came into the girls' dressing room. She was playing Regina and was in the year above me, and she was also in the musical last year for the first time so she new what I was going through. I just didn't understand how someone so sweet was playing someone so manipulating.

"Yeah a little." I replied making sure my mic was secure.

"I get that, but Maya you're amazing, believe in yourself." She said making me smile, "also, I don't plan on properly kissing Josh, just a kiss to the side of his mouth."

"What?"

"Maya even a blind person could see the sparks between you both. Don't worry, I'm not gonna tell anyone." She smiled and put on makeup.

"I-" I went to reply but was interrupted.

"Hey, can I talk to Maya quickly?" Josh asked at the door.

"Yeah sure." I got up and went out to the corridor to talk to him. "What's up?" I asked him.

"I know you and I know you're nervous right now but I just wanted to come tell you that you're gonna be amazing and believe in yourself, you're gonna smash it." He smiled making me smile.

"Thank you Josh, that really means a lot. You're gonna be amazing too." I hugged him carefully making sure I didn't get makeup all over him.

Places were called so we broke apart and I went around to the side of the stage and waited for the first few notes of It Roars to play.

Josh's POV

Act one of the musical went very fast. I got to watch Maya smash it from the wide of the stage for quite a few scenes and I really loved singing Stupid With Love with her. She made me so happy.

"Hey." She came up to me in the interval after changing into the outfit she wears for Stop.

"Hi. Maya you were amazing." I smiled at her and held her hand.

"So were you. As weird as this sounds I actually felt fearless while singing Fearless." She chuckled making me chuckle too.

"Well I'm glad." I admitted.

"It's definitely one of my favourite numbers. I love Stupid With Love of course and I'm excited for More Is Better." She smirked then walked off knowing damn well that we would have to kiss in that scene and that we haven't rehearsed it so it would be our first kiss.

Maya's POV

I suddenly had a wave of confidence and couldn't wait to go back and perform act two, despite feeling sick about kissing Josh but there were still a few scenes before that one, including Whose House Is This? which is really fun to do.

Places where called again and I walked to the back of the stage with Lauren, Gretchen, and Josie, Karen, and waited for A Cautionary Tale (reprise) to start then got into character and strut onto the stage.

Act two felt much quicker. I just changed into my costume for Whose House Is This? and suddenly realised Josh was about to see me in it and have to let me kiss him. I'd never kissed anyone - what if I did it wrong? Or what if I was bad at it?

I tried to get those thoughts to leave my brain and focus on the performance.

Josh's POV

I watched from the wings as I got changed quick from the sports costume into the More Is Better costume quite quickly.

"It was always my house." I chuckled at the line Maya had to sing while acting kind of drunk before I made my way through the fake door and up the fake stairs onto the platform where the mini fake bedroom was.

"Whatdidntyousaymeetmeupstairs?" She slurred making me chuckle.

The scene went on and despite the fact we were told what we had to say, it felt natural, until, "it worked, like pretending I needed a tutor."

The kiss definitely wasn't acting. It felt real and had so many emotions behind it, but unfortunately I had to pull away.

The rest of Act 2 went on, I really enjoyed the Do This Thing scene and watching Maya sing about maths even though I knew she had no clue what she was on about which was quite entertaining.

Then Stars came. She really did have an amazing voice and I loved how much she was smiling while singing it.

I also loved the fact I got to lift her up and spin her around, while wearing the North Shore Lions Costume.

Curtain call came and I was so, so proud of her. She actually did that and to think she wasn't even going to audition in the first place.

So many people stood up when she came out and I smiled so much.

Maya's POV

I did it. I actually did it. I also kissed Josh. Wow.

"You did it." He came up and picked me up backstage just after curtain calls.

"So did you." I put my arms around him and hugged him.

"I barely done anything compared to you." He put me down and gave me a proper hug.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say." I teased.

"So, do you know what the derivative of F at argument Z even means?" He teased back.

"No." I laughed.

"Maybe you're the opposite." He smirked.

"What? Stupid with maths and smart with love?"

"Correct.

"I'm not smart with love." I chuckled.

"I can teach you." He smirked.

"What-" Next thing I knew his lips were on mine. I smiled into the kiss and pulled him closer.

I definitely could live with being the opposite. And I'm definitely thankful I auditioned.
