I woke up with my lips against the blonde's. He pulled back quickly as I started to cough up water. "Are you okay Jake?" He said as he looked into my green eyes.
I was blushing a lot, kind of wanting to disappear. "Y-yeah..." I pushed him away and sat up. "I can't believe you kissed me!" I almost yelled.
"Wait what?" He frowned, raising an eyebrow. "I didn't kiss you! I was trying to save you!!" His eyes looked hurt. "And besides that...you didn't like it?" Now he was just flirting, light blush dusting his cheeks.
"W-what?" I looked startled up at him, my eyes wide. Dirk looked serious though. "I, um...I guess I did." I said instead of getting mad again.
"Good." He smiled. "Anyways, I've gotta get going. My bro doesn't know I left and he'll be home any minute." Dirk absconded pretty quickly, diving into the water and swimming into the depths of the dark ocean water.
-------
I didn't get home until all of the stars were out and the entire time I was walking home, I thought of the kiss. I thought of his soft lips on mine. I thought of the blush that covered his face when he asked if I liked it. I really did like it. I loved it.
No what are you doing Jake? You can't be with Dirk! He's a fish! You're a human! Unless.... I thought back to what Dirk told him the first time they met. 'Other than my tail, the only interesting thing about me is if I have a really good reason I can try to become a human.' That's it! Love is a good enough reason! Then I thought about what he said after that. 'Chances are she'd kill me...' I sighed. No. Dirk couldn't die.
I laid down on my bed, staring up at the window above me that showed the stars perfectly. Whatever...I'll think about it in the morning. And with that, I fell asleep.
------
For the next few weeks, I stayed home a lot. Every time I went to see Dirk, he wasn't there. I wanted to see him again and kiss him and tell him I loved him, but obviously, he didn't feel the same.
It took me three months to find out that Dirk had been trying to find me every day. He wanted the same things I wanted and I only knew that because when we met up for the first time in that three months, he kissed me again before I could even say hey. And it was amazing.
"I love you..." He whispered, pulling away just enough to talk. He placed his forehead against mine and his hands on my shoulders. "And I told my brother I wanted to be a human."
I freaked out, my eyes widening. "What?! Dirk, no, that's dangerous!! You're gonna get killed!"
"I know but it's worth it Jake. I love you...." He tried again with the sweet words, but it didn't fool me.
"No, Dirk, you can't." I frowned at him.
"Okay...there's another way, I promise....I know of a bracelet that will let me have human legs whenever I wear it." He looked into my eyes.
"Dirk. It's too dangerous...." I looked down so he couldn't mesmerize me with his orange eyes.
"Too late." He dove into the water again after he quickly kissed me and I watched him swim down into the depths of the ocean again.
The next time I saw him, he was standing at my front door. I opened the door and saw him, my jaw dropping when I saw his legs. "D-Dirk! How'd you--" He lifted his arm, showing me the bracelet and then smiling and stepping forward. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed back deeply.
"Dirk..." I said against his lips. He hushed me and stepped into the house, closing the door behind him. "Just embrace it...." he whispered, pushing me back against the wall and deepening the kiss. "Dirk..no...."
"I don't know how long I can be here Jake....my bro will find out I'm gone any time now and I want to spend the time I have getting closer to you." He said before kissing me again.
"Well this isn't the way to do that, just stop...." I protested. Dirk kept going though, pushing me down on the bed and crawling on top of me. "Dirk..." I pushed him gently. Soon, his hands made their way to my shorts and started to unbutton them. "Dirk, stop!" I yelled, pushing him off of me roughly and frowning. "I said not now. I'm not ready!" Dirk nodded and stood straight, looking down. "S-sorry..." he turned away and sighed. "I don't know what's gotten into me..."
"It's fine...." I stood up. "Maybe later....."
"Okay..." Dirk walked towards the door.
"Wait." I said softly. "We can go on a date...see where it leads....?" I asked.
"Sure." Dirk looked up at me and smiled softly.
The date lasted until 12AM. It didn't go anywhere but it made it easier for the next time Jake saw him to lead somewhere. "I love you..." I whispered as Dirk held me in his arms and I slowly fell asleep. Today was the best day ever.
"I love you too...." Dirk whispered right as I fell asleep.
