So continues the interminable cycle of life in Sigma, the sprawling criminal organisation that is holding virtuoso pianist Zephyr Park captive in California's mega-city capital, Maria. Freedom arrives in the shape of a raging fire, and a shy and secretive stranger named Will, who appears out of the smoke and whisks Zephyr out of Sigma's clutches. Traumatised by his ordeal, Zephyr vows never to play piano again.
The police have been locked in a decades-long battle with Sigma, but with his intimate knowledge of the labyrinthine plots and power-struggles between Sigma's gang members, Zephyr is the only one who can hope to thwart their plans, save his friends who are still trapped behind Sigma's walls, and find his family who are mysteriously untraceable by South Korean authorities.
Forced into an uneasy alliance with his reluctant saviour, Zephyr discovers that Will has been hiding a deep and captivating connection to music that fills Zephyr with jealousy and fascination. But musical virtuosity is not all that Will has been hiding: Zephyr stumbles on Will's dark past, a tangled web of secrets, lies, and hidden connections.
As he risks his newly-found freedom to prevent his family and friends from becoming Sigma's latest targets, Zephyr must follow the clues in Will's ever-shifting musical landscape to discover if Will's true goal is to help him, or to lure him deeper into peril, as they spiral inexorably together.
