DESPITE all my concerns and troubles, I still feel like the luckiest man on Earth.
As I sit on y/n's bed in nothing but my underwear, I cannot help but feel content. We've spent the last half hour playing Uno, and stuffing our faces with snacks. I've lost the last three rounds, but I'm still as happy as a clam. It's like I'm on a sleepover with my crush. The entire thing is causing me to feel as giddy and excited as a lovestruck teenager, no matter that I'm just two years shy from turning thirty.
I'm allowing myself to feel happy just this once after weeks that have been nothing less than absolutely brutal torture. I've certainly earned to indulge myself in a little bit of pleasure... Right?
"When's your birthday?" y/n asks, peeking over the cards she holds in her hand. Her eyes are bright and clear when she looks at me. She's so happy.
I've made her happy.
"July 7th," I reply, choosing between a blue six, or a plus four to throw her off her winning streak. She's been asking me question after question whilst we're playing, in order to get to know me better. I find it adorable, and because of it - I place the blue card onto the little pile, instead.
"Ah, it all makes sense now," she snickers before placing a card of her own on top of the one I've just put down, "No wonder you're so emotional and moody, then."
"What's that supposed to mean, mm?" I hum, and can feel my brow arch in pure curiosity. If she doesn't tread carefully now, I'm going to have to really start considering that plus four.
"You're a cancer," she says and at the puzzled look to fall upon my face, she is fast to continue with a giggle, "Your zodiac sign, I mean! Cancers tend to be very sensitive, as far as I know."
"Tsch, I'm not sensitive," I reply, quickly placing the card that forces her to draw four more.
"Yeah, sure," she sighs, giving me an eye roll, "Not sensitive at all, I see... Pick a colour, you big baby."
"Hey, I have thick skin!" I am fast to fight my case, before checking my cards again, "Red."
"Yeah, thick skin - like a hard shell of a crab." she chuckles as she places a red three, "You're such an obvious cancer."
"What else do you know about them?" I ask, because I can see that she clearly enjoys the subject. As for myself, I have zero clue about astrology. She could have told me that my zodiac sign was a camel, and I'd still believe her.
"Mm..." she hums as she searches her memory, "You're very family-oriented, intimate, and enjoy deep, emotional connections. As for the bad side, like I've said... Hyper emotional. You're also temperamental and spiteful... At least that's what I think I've read somewhere."
"Family-oriented?" I ask, finally placing a card of my own onto the pile.
"Yeah," she says, and furrows her brows tightly together before drawing an extra card from the deck. Out of reds, it seems. "You enjoy a sturdy home, and would do anything to protect your close ones. You're also extremely attached to your family, and in most cases; cancers want to start one of their own." she adds.
"True, even though I still think it's all a bunch of bullshit what you're saying." I drawl and flick another red onto the pile, "But yeah, I really am close with my mom and sis."
"Do you want kids?" she asks, glancing at me quickly.
"Yeah. Two... Maybe three. Even though it'd be chaotic, I know from personal experience that it's still a lot of fun if you have a sibling. So, I want my kids to experience the same," I grin. Her face reddens into a faint rosy colour at my answer. It makes me change the subject, "I used to fight with Hana a lot, but we've grown super close, now as we're older."
"How old is she?" she hums with a mischievous little grin before placing a plus four of her own on top of the pile. This round never seems to end.
"Uh, she's thirty-two. Four years older than me." I reply, drawing the four extra cards with a dramatic eye roll, "Though, she acts like she's four decades older, if you ask me. All high and mighty, always yappin' on how more grown-up she is than I am."
"Well, she might be onto something there." she chuckles, and her words make me glare at her jokingly. She looks at me again, her smile a beam of sheer, utter glee, "You do act like a pouty kid, sometimes."
"Excuse me?! What's that supposed to mean?" I feign shock and offence, placing one palm to my heart, "I pay the bills, and I work, and I... I... Hm."
"There it is," she laughs quietly. I like hearing her laugh. Looking at her, too. Her nose scrunches up in the most adorable way when she does it, and the sound is gentle; like wind-chimes caught in a gentle breeze. It makes my pulse quicken. Oh god, I'm down bad.
"Ha ha, funny," I chuckle, trying my hardest not to blush then and there, "Just play the damn game, and choose a colour already."
"Yellow," she says after a moment of thought, "Next question... Do you have any pet peeves?"
"Not really..." I shrug, finding a single yellow card to place upon the pile, "No, wait... I hate it when people chew loudly. Drives me nuts. Naruto especially, with that big-ass mouth of his which he never seems to close."
"Well, that's rather ironic," she snorts, shaking her head lightly before placing a card of her own down, "Considering that you chew real loud as well."
"It's different when I do it, okay?" I sigh, drawing another card.
"So, if I were to...?" she trails off softly, and starts reaching for the packet of Cheetos residing right next to me. Before she can even touch it, my hand is fast as lightning to yank it further away from her.
"Don't even think about it, sweetheart." I laugh lowly, and hold the packet behind my back when she suddenly reaches out to try and grab it from me.
"Come on, I just want to see your eye twitch from annoyance, just like it's been doing for the last three rounds..."
"Funny."
"The last three rounds, which I've won, might I add... Oh, and the fourth one, which I'm going to win, as well!" she snickers as she stretches her arm. She knocks the wind from me when she stumbles, and falls on top of me as a result.
She's wearing nothing else but her pretty panties and the hoodie which I've brought with me for that night, and that's certainly much too big for her. I like seeing her wearing my clothes, but what I like even more is that she smells just like me. It's like she belongs to me. All mine.
"I've let you win, thank you very much!" I grin up at her, before dropping the cards in my hand to be able to hold her close. She's long since messed up the deck by making her way towards me, anyway.
"Uh, no you didn't?" she pouts at me, and the little 'v' to form between her brows now is so adorable, that I place a kiss on top of it just to smooth it down, "I've won fair and square. It's not my fault that you're such a sore loser."
"Aha, you keep on living in that little fantasy world of yours, if it makes ya feel any better." I say, and place another kiss onto her cheek. Her skin feels so soft and warm underneath my lips. It just makes me kiss her again. And again, and again, and again. By now, I'm smothering her pretty face in loving smooches. All she does is laugh.
In all honesty, she's right. I'd most surely lose the fourth round in a row.
But, when it comes to her - I still feel like I've won.
