My Top 5 Songs of the Year:
1) жестокость - Помни Имя Свое (Cruelty - Remember Your Name)
The song actually made me tear up a bit. It came on at the right time, honestly. Otherwise I would've been fine. I found the lyrics after translating the title (thanks, phone) and they leave little to the imagination. The amount of raw, straightforward emotion put forth is what makes this song great. It may sound melodramatic to some, but to me it was great.
2) Swamped (Studio Acoustic Version) - Lacuna Coil
I love the regular version of this song. It was one of my favorites in high school. This seems like the non-metal "adult" version of the same song on the surface. But, to me, it's like a song that's changed its meaning a bit. The normal song has a more chaotic sound, while this acoustic version is much more straightforward without changing the original meaning of the lyrics or obliterating the tone. It's like what one would be thinking versus what a situation actually is.
3) Uja - Tanya Tagaq
This song is just really unique. Very few lyrics (or even spoken words), a simple melody, and invokes scenes of turmoil without resorting to the go-to playbooks established genres like metal or pop use. It's something that sits in the back of my mind. Something I can interpret many different ways. It's much different from the type of music I normally listen to.
4) What's My Name - MXMS
I like this song for how blunt it is. It tells a simple story at the end of the day, but do songs need to hide everything behind layers of symbolism and poetry? I feel like if this song came out when I was in middle school or high school, I would've loved it. As I am now, I like the song for being "simply melancholy."
5) PANTHER - Pain of Salvation
It's like I get transported back to the early to mid 2000s every time I hear this song. But without all the grunge and jagged edges of that era (also without the unrefined CGI music videos). The song is more of a nostalgia trip than anything, but I appreciate the message behind the song, even if it doesn't come through as clearly to me.
