We followed Crowley to an abandoned house he'd apparently been squatting in since losing his mansion we'd met him in before. I'd stopped bouncing up and down, but my eyes still twinkled with the possibility that I still might get a chance to stab the demon in the back... literally.
"Here we are," the demon in question sighed. "My life on the Iam. How the mighty have fallen. Single pane glass, used contraception in the fireplace, the water damage alone-"
"My heart's bleeding for you," Dean rolled his eyes. "Now, how do you know about the rings?"
"Well, now... I've been keeping a close eye on you lot."
"We got hex bags," Sam cut in. "We're hidden from demons."
"All but one," Crowley corrected. "The night you broke into my house, our first date, my valet hid a tracking device in your car- A magical coin that easily trumps your little bags o' bones. It allows me to hear things too, and my the things I've heard."
He chuckled, glancing between Dean and I and I turned to give Dean a pleading look. However, he just shook his head at me as the demon continued.
"So, you want to cram the Devil back in the box? Cunning scheme. I want in."
"You said you could get us Pestilence."
"Well, now... I don't know where Pestilence is... Per se. But I do know the demon who does. He's what you might call the Horsemen's stable boy. He handles their itineraries, their personal needs. He's who you want- believe me. He'll tell us where Sneezy's at."
"Well, how do we get him to spill? Rip out his toenails?"
"No. Nuts at his pay grade don't crack. We bring him here, then I sell him."
"Sell him?" Sam repeated.
"Please. I've sold sin to saints for centuries," Crowley scoffed. "Think I can't close one little demon?"
"Alright, so where's this demon of yours?" Dean asked.
⁘
Crowley agreed to lead the way to the demon, but only if Sam and I stayed behind. Apparently, he didn't like or trust Sam, and since I was eagerly waiting to kill him, he wanted nothing to do with me either. So, Dean and Crowley went alone while Sam and I stayed behind at the house.
I went for a walk, coming back in time to hear Sam on the phone with Bobby.
"What if you guys lead the Devil to the edge and I jump in?.. It'd be just like when you turned the knife on yourself. One action- just one leap."
"Are you idjits trying to kill me?!"
I winced as Sam held the phone away from his ear, making out Bobby's voice from my hiding spot around the corner.
"Bobby-"
"We just gone done talking your brother off the ledge, and now you're lining up to say 'yes'?"
"It's not like that. I'm not gonna do it. Not unless we all agree. But I think we got to look at our options."
I couldn't make out Bobby's voice on the other end any more.
"Why not?" Sam asked.
There was a long bout of silence, as Bobby no doubt went off on a lengthy explanation for Sam.
"Yeah. Yeah, I am."
Another lengthy silence.
"I'm strong enough."
After a moment longer, I heard the snap of Sam's phone as he hung up. Before I could think it through, I was rounding the corner and stalking toward the man who I considered a little brother.
"You want to say 'yes' now?"
"Ellie-"
"Shut up for a second, Sam. You think you can trick Lucifer into the cage of you say 'yes'?"
"I do," he nodded.
"Okay."
"What?"
"I mean, it's not me you have to convince, clearly. I can talk to Bobby some more, but you're the one who's talking to Dean."
"W-wait... You're okay with me letting Satan possess me?"
I took a deep breath, letting it out long and slow before nodding.
"I told Dean I had faith in all of us. That I knew he'd make the right call when it came to Michael. I believe the same thing with you and Lucifer. If the way we're gonna get him back in that Cage once we get all the rings is for you to say 'yes', then I trust you, Sammy."
Sam smiled up at me and I gave him a small one back. That was something I'd been working on lately, is smiling more often. I couldn't bring myself to when my mind was being overtaken by the darkness, and so I'd made it my goal to do it at least once a day after my talk with my father.
"Thanks, Ellie."
"Of course, Sammy."
I ruffled the top of his head like a little kid, and he shoved me away, laughing. That made my smile widen, and pretty soon we were both laughing and shoving each other around. If you just ignored the fact we were in a dirty, broken down old house, it was almost like when we were kids again, playing together at my father's shop.
We were still playing around on the floor when the distinct sound of the Impala met our ears. We went downstairs to see Crowley standing by the front door.
"Where's Dean?" I asked the demon.
"Now... For the record, I'm against this. Negotiating a high-level defection- It's very delicate business."
"What are you talking about?" Sam demanded.
"I begged Dean not to come back. We should be miles away... from you," Crowley glared pointedly at Sam. "He replied with a colorful rejoinder about my 'corn chute'."
Beside me, Sam scoffed. Our good moods from upstairs were totally forgotten by now.
"So, go ahead," the demon gestured to the next room. "Go- ruin our last best hope. It's only the end of the world."
I hung back, glaring at Crowley as Sam went in to talk to Dean.
"What-"
I didn't even have time to get through the sentence before Sam was yelling and Dean was pushing him from the room.
"Get out of my way!" Sam yelled at his brother.
"No," Dean replied.
"Get out of my way, Dean."
"There is only one way to win, and it ain't by killing that thing in there," Dean tried reasoning with his brother.
"Well... Sounds like you got him nice and fluffed. Thanks so much."
Crowley skirted around the brothers into the room with the other demon.
"Listen to me," Dean began. "We need Pestilence to get to the Devil, and we need Brady to get to Pestilence."
"Why? Because Crowley said so?" Sam spat. "Because we trust him now? Like I trusted Ruby? Or like I trusted Brady back in school?"
"Sammy," I said gently, putting a hand on his arm.
He shook me off, wrenching the front door open and stalking out.
