"Dammit, Cass, answer me, you son of a bitch!"

Maddie was at school and I'd taken the day off from my usual responsibilities to try and get some answers from the angel, but he wasn't answering my prayers. I had told Maddie that Daddy was on a work trip and he would be back as soon as he could. She'd been understandably upset she still wasn't going to have her father around to put her to bed, but it couldn't be helped. Giving a frustrated sigh, I plopped down on the couch with a huff, massaging my forehead with one hand.

"Useless little-"

"Eleanor."

I opened my eyes, sitting up straight on the couch and looking up at the angel in front of me. He looked just as I remembered him; same rumpled suit and tan trench coat, same dark hair and piercing blue eyes. And, of course, sporting a fluffy pair of black wings curled on his back.

"Cass," I greeted him.

"You called."

"Yeah, Cass, I've been calling. For the past hour and a half."

"You're upset."

"Upset?" I repeated. "Upset? Upset is a severe understatement, Cass."

"What happened?" he inquired.

"Dean left. He went to go hunt something. I didn't get any details. But he said he'd be back in a couple of days."

"I don't understand," Cass tilted his head in confusion. "How is that a problem if he is coming back?"

"It's the way it happened, Cass. Sam showed up. He told Dean that they needed him to actually work the case. Not just help with research, legitimately work the case. And then they left together late last night."

"Who?"

"What?"

"You said Sam told Dean they needed him to help. Who is 'they'?"

I opened my mouth and shut it again a few times before shrugging helplessly.

"I have no clue. I was too shocked by the fact that Sam showed up to process... Wait a minute. Why aren't you more shocked to hear that Sam is back?"

Cass looked around guiltily, avoiding my gaze.

"YOU KNEW?! You knew he was back, and you didn't pop by to say anything?!"

Cass didn't respond, still avoiding my gaze as I glared at him with a fire deep in my eyes.

"Did you also know Dean's been working with him?"

More silence from the angel in front of me, and I gave a frustrated outburst.

"Ugh! You know, I ought to-"

A familiar warmth started bubbling up in my chest that I hadn't felt in forever and Castiel immediately started backing away from me.

"Eleanor, please," he begged. "You need to calm down."

"How long?"

"Eleanor, please-"

"How long, Castiel?!"

"Sam has been back for nearly a year. Dean only found out and started working with him a few weeks ago. They didn't want to tell you, because Dean wanted you and Madelaine to continue living your lives like normal."

I felt the warmth simmer down and disappear, and Cass began to relax in front of me. I was still angry beyond words or explanation, but I understood that I wasn't finding out until now because Dean cared about me and Maddie and wanted what was best for us.

"Do you have any idea how Sam got out of the Cage?" I inquired gently.

"No, I don't," Cass shook his head. "I already informed him and Dean, it wasn't God because no one has seen Him. The whole thing remains mysterious."

I swallowed, thinking back to what had happened late last night when Dean had finally come home.

"Sam seemed... dead inside. Like, he was present, but he wasn't all here," I spoke slowly. "Is that even possible?"

"Dean has expressed similar concerns. He is unsure what is going on, but he thinks there is something wrong with Sam."

Closing my eyes and running my fingers through my red curls, I let out a long, slow breath.

"Well, have you tried to figure out what's wrong with him?"

"I have asked around a little, but I've been very busy lately with other matters," Cass admitted.

"Other matters?"

"Since you and the Winchesters derailed the apocalypse, it's been total anarchy up in Heaven. Raphael and his followers want him to rule Heaven, but I- and many others- don't want that to happen. It would be catastrophic."

"The angels are fighting a civil war?"

"Yes."

I sighed, leaning back on the couch and staring up at the ceiling in silence. Castiel was also quiet, just staring at me while I tried to get my thoughts in order.

"Alright. You're busy, and have better things to do with your time right now. You can leave if you want. Forget I bothered you."

"Eleanor," Cass began, taking a step forward. "I may be fighting a war right now, but just as I am trying to find out what happened to Sam for Dean, I will happily help you with anything you ask."

"Why? Because I'm the Ecclesia?" I spat, rolling my eyes.

"No, because like Dean and I, you and I share a profound bond. You and Dean are in my charge, and your problems always come first."

"What does that mean? 'Profound bond'?"

"You and Dean are soulmates."

"Yeah, I remember," I nodded, recalling the run-in we had with the Cupid when we were dealing with Famine.

"Well, each pair of soulmates is assigned a... guardian angel, if you will. Someone to watch over them and keep them safe."

"And you were the angel assigned to Dean and I."

Cass nodded in confirmation.

"It's why you could hear my voice in your head and why I was the one to raise Dean from Perdition. I want to help you, Eleanor. You need only ask."

"Just..." I trailed off, hesitating slightly. "Can, uh, can you keep an eye on Dean? Let me know what he's up to? He isn't telling me as much as he probably should, and I just want to make sure he's safe."

"Of course. I will let you know as soon as I know more."

"Thanks, Cass. And keep me updated on the other stuff, too. I'd like to know what's up with Sam. And how your civil war goes."

The angel smiled a little, nodding his head once more.

"I will be in touch."

With a flap of his wings, he was gone.
