It did not take very long for the UK government to succumb to Myriad control and at an exponential rate the Myriad's influence spread around the globe.  Soon most governments were working under their authority and most major corporations and organisations began unconsciously to do their bidding.  In Whitehall, at the centre of it all, Mortimer Frisk's army of Myriad soldiers coordinated the infiltration, their whispering scouts travelling far and wide.

To reach the 'Threshold' Mortimer knew that the Myriad had to do more than just take over the world's leaders; they had to ensure that everyone everywhere was exposed.  To this end they took measures to increase the numbers of social interactions, to make more people meet face-to face.

In transport hubs automated ticket machines began to break down.  Few complained however when so many smiling human ticket collectors took their place that their journeys happened more smoothly than ever before.   New mass appeal events were announced – free concerts, festivals and sporting events designed to get large numbers of people together.  The exciting festival atmosphere acted to blinker the populace to the increasing numbers of people silently disappearing from amongst them.

Ostensibly the secret change of regime appeared to have some benefits: Centralised food distribution centres sprang up overnight in every city, town and village, delivering food and shelter to the homeless and disadvantaged while at the same time increasing social interactions.  Ceasefires were announced for the many wars taking place globally with governments announcing that old rivalries were to be abandoned and compromises were to be made.  With the money saved on fighting these wars the wealth could be spread to the people to fund a new prosperity and to bring people closer together.  In reality the Myriad had no wish to inherit a world ravaged by war – it was far better for their unwitting hosts to feather their nest for them before they were pushed out of it and into oblivion.

With no wars to fight service personnel were recalled home.  As the numbers of the domestic standing armies swelled they were put to work facilitating the many new public festivities and services.  It was important for the Myriad that these armies were conserved since once the Threshold was reached it would be them that led the final push to overwhelm humanity.
