A Lesson in Hyuga Clan History

Before the formation of hidden villages and nations, clans often warred with each other for territory and resources.  Clans formed alliances with each other to conquer common enemies. Many clans wanted to alliance with the Hyuga Clan as they were considered royalty during that time because their Bykugan and direct Otsutsuki  heritage. Many sought to marry into the clan in hopes of introducing the Bykugan and royal blood into their own clan.

During this time, a particularly powerful pack of Oni consistently attacked the Hyuga Clan. They kidnapped children, destroyed crops, and corrupted the clan's water supply. No one could defeat them. Many clan members were killed trying to capture them. Eventually, the Hyuga Clan entered an alliance with another clan from present day Uzushiogakure for their special sealing abilities. At that time, The Last Hyuga King agreed to marry one of his daughters to the other clan leader's only son in exchange for sealing away the creatures .

"Oni?" Naruto interrupted, confused and scratching his head. "Those aren't real."

Sasuke frowned as he pondered what Orochimaru just shared. He glanced at Naruto.

"Like from children's stories?" Sakura asked, smirking.  In her mind, she pictured tiny little creatures her mother would say that would take her toys if she didn't do her chores when she was younger.

"They were real," Orochimaru insisted, leaning down to turn the page in front of Sakura. She gasped while Naruto and Sasuke leaned over her shoulder to get a closer look at the page. A picture of an giant oni leaping towards them from the page. The creature's mouth was open spewing flames at its feet. Horns curled from the side of its head towards opposite ends of the page. Around the creature's feet, a group of ninjas tried to capture it. Small flames, wind, and water lines illustrating various jutsu used to combat the oni's assault. "And not the ones from children's stories. These are truly monsters- intelligent. Destructive. Deadly. Perfect Allies — if they weren't all extinct or sealed away." 

Sasuke narrowed his eyes at Orochimaru. " Oni...what do oni have to do with the Hyuga Clan's jutsu?" Orochimaru cleared his throat before continuing.

After the clan successfully sealed the oni's pack for the Hyuga Clan, there was an disagreement. There was a dispute over which daughter would marry the clan leader's son. Some say that the son wanted to eldest daughter, who possessed a very pure byukagan. Her father refused and wanted to give away his younger daughter. This part of the story varies. There are multiple versions—it all ends the same.  Three nights later, the eldest daughter disappears from her clan's grounds. Some say the other clan leader's son was enraged and kidnapped the daughter because the Hyuga King didn't keep his word.

" I don't believe that." Naruto interrupted again. While Orochimaru spoke, Naruto had taken the book from Sakura and turned through the pages. His eyes roamed the pages that were illustrated with the story. The symbols leapt out at the pages to him. Some he recognize from the Hyuga Clan compound.

"And why is that?" Orochimaru asked , an amused smirk played around the edge of his mouth. Sasuke and Sakura looked expectantly. 

"There's no way he could have kidnapped her. She would have to go willingly. It would be almost impossible to sneak past all those Byukagans undetected." Naruto shook his head in disbelief. Orochimaru chuckled.

"If I didn't know any better, I would think you were speaking from personal experience," Orochimaru commented with a raised eyebrow. Naruto stammered and turned bright red. "But I agree, I think the two were in love. I believe the daughter went willingly." Then he continued.

When the Hyuga King discovered that his daughter was gone, his only son decided to rescue his sister. He rescued his sister. Unfortunately, the Hyuga prince was killed in the clash between the two clans. The son's death greatly grieved the king. Without a son, there was no heir. He swore revenge on the clan that once helped him. He demanded that the eldest daughter would marry from within the clan to provide an heir. She refused. She tried escape several time and failed. Some say she even begged her father to return her to the other clan because it was bad karma to break an agreement. But the Hygua King refused.
