He placed a detached sweet flower behind your ear, and you noticed how pretty his eyes looked in the sunlight, showing the star-shaped pattern on his eye and the bluish purple tones resembling a night sky.
"You look pretty that way." You broke away from your thoughts and came back to reality. "Hmm?" You asked.
"I said you look pretty with the flower. I mean, not that you're not pretty without it, but it makes you look even prettier." He stammered.
"Oh, haha. I understand." You smiled.
He turned red seeing your smile. "I—I wanted to tell you something."
"What is it?" You looked at them with curious eyes.
"I... I..." He looked extremely nervous and stared at you.
He pressed his lips against yours quickly, making your eyes widen. He pulled back yelling, "I like you a lot!" His cheeks flushed red.
"Oh, you do? I..." You put your arms behind your back, feeling yourself heat up.
He puts his hands in front of him, waving them. "You don't have to like me back! I know I'm not the greatest person compared to Diluc and Thoma, but I just wanted to let you know. Forget what I said even."
You breathed in and told him, "Kaeya, you're annoying sometimes, but you can be sweet. I think I... like you too."
"Hmm?" His eyes widened.
You held his hands and were about to kiss him on the cheek, until you heard someone running to the tree you were both under.
"Hey guys, I was looking all over for you- Huh, what are you guys doing?" It was Diluc who found you both.
You noticed you were still holding Kaeya's hands and were close to their face. You immediately pulled away in embarrassment. Kaeya noticed as well and spoke up, "Oh, we were just playing a game!" He nervously blurted out.
"Yeah, a game!" You added.
"You guys are lying. I saw you guys holding hands. Kaeya, don't tell me you-"
"I didn't, I swear!" He waved his hands.
Diluc looked like he was about to cry. "I told you how I felt about Y/N!" He yelled.
"Well... what if I felt the same too! I deserve a chance as well."
"No, you don't! We took you into our house, so you shouldn't do things I tell you not to!"
"Diluc, I'm my own person-"
"I don't want to hear it, don't talk to me again!"
You stood there in shock while Diluc ran away in tears.
"Diluc, wait!" He looked back at you quickly. "I'm sorry, Y/N. But I have to go after Diluc." He ran away as well.
You were shocked that both the brothers liked you. You liked Diluc because he was very respectful and kind towards you, but you also liked Kaeya because he seemed like he always felt unworthy yet he was someone you cherished in your life equally as well. You wanted to show him that he was important and worthy to you. Even though you didn't show it, you cared about Kaeya a lot but being in love with them was something you weren't so sure of. You were only kids, 12 year olds in fact.
You sighed, taking the sweet flower off your ear and putting it on the grass. You decided to go home, going over everything that had happened.

Kaeya chuckled. "Haha, that old quarrel? I remember that."
"Yeah... it was very childish." You laughed.
"It was foolish, but I did that as a child because I was afraid that if I didn't say something first, I would lose you. I think it was a pretty selfish act because I wasn't even sure of my own feelings." He contemplated, almost squinting his eyes.
"Oh... I mean, I think what you did was valid." You said as you took a sip from your drink.
"Really? Well, that was a thing of the past. Now..." He looked over at you. "I'd say we're great longtime friends and co-workers." He smiled.
Deep down, Kaeya still held feelings for you but he suppressed them, thinking that it would only complicate your relationship with him and he didn't want you to be involved with his affairs. He thought it would be too much of a burden on you to express how he truly felt.
"Yeah..." Your heart ached, thinking that something more could've happened between you two. You finished you drink and were packing up your belongings. "It was nice catching up with you, Kaeya. I really missed... talking to you as friends."
He stood up from his stool and smiled. "I missed talking to you too." You nodded your head and were about to leave the tavern.
"Wait, Y/N." You looked back at him, which reminded you of the day he told you that strange story.
He went towards you and held you in his arms to hug you. His surprisingly warm embrace made you feel like having butterflies. He pulled away and looked at you while putting his hands on your shoulders. "I just wanted to say you mean a lot to me... I would love to spend time with you again."
You chuckled nervously because of how close you were. "Oh, haha. I feel the same towards you. If you'd like to see me again, you can always stop by my office to make plans or anything."
"Oh, I would like that. Thank you." He let go of his hands and relaxed them back at his sides. "I'll see you again soon."
"Mhm, I will too." You were slightly shaking from nervousness and awkwardly waved. "Bye."
"Bye, Y/N." He smiled, waving his hand.
You turned away and closed the door to the tavern behind you, sighing after you were out of sight.
Even though he couldn't tell you how he felt, he still wanted you to be in his life as a friend. The gesture seemed more than friendly, but he didn't know how else to tell you what he wanted.
You on the other hand were shaken up by how friendly and affectionate he was being. However, it gave you a small hope that a little childhood crush you had could turn into something more since you were both adults who could discern their feelings rather than being simply infatuated.
