Golden ornaments decorate the village center. Here and there hanging between the buildings and trees are fairy lights. The glittery ribbons twinkle in the sunlight, and I can only imagine how beautiful they are going to look at night when reflecting the surrounding lights.
The whole team is here. That of course means Sonic, Tails, Sticks, Amy and Knuckles. And in a way I guess it means me too. We have been here for some time now, our mission being to decorate the village for the upcoming New Year's party. Mostly it has just been Amy calling the shots and telling us what to do, and it's pretty much the same now too. Right now, she is standing on top of a ladder held in place by Knuckles. As she finishes tying up a ribbon onto the tree trunk, her gaze turns down to us, "Come on, everybody! These decorations aren't gonna hang themselves!"
Tails smirks, "Oh, aren't they?" In his hands is a bazooka-like device that connects to a container that he's wearing like a backpack. He points the bazooka over to the nearby huts and pulls the trigger. Out shoots festoons just like the ones Amy was tying on the tree. The decorations fly across the sky, land on the huts and latch onto them. With just a few shots the whole village center has been decorated.
The fox turns around to Amy who has climbed down from the ladder. As he smirks at her, the pink hedgehog crosses her arms. "They still didn't hang themselves. Your machine did it!" she tells him.
Knuckles, who is standing beside her, also crosses his arms, "Not cool, Tails."
Sticks walks over to the fox and says, "Take those things down! You're gonna attract bugs, and aliens, and kumquats, and list jokes!"
"Kumquats," I state and just stare at the badger. I'm really failing to understand how decorations would attract any of the things she listed but it's the kumquats I'm most confused about. Jokes I get. Aliens, kinda. Bugs, ehh.
"Come on, guys, lay off him!" Sonic says as he walks next to his friend. Suddenly, everywhere around the plaza decorations come crashing down. What had just been a beautifully decorated site for a party now looks like... well in a way it now looks like how it's gonna look after the party. All trashed, golden ribbons on the ground, broken decorations. Sonic turns to Tails, "Way to ruin New Year's, dude."
Knuckles joins the conversation by asking, "Is that the holiday where a giant rabbit breaks into your house and hides painted eggs?"
I don't get a chance to tell him that he has mistaken it for Easter, because Amy —who is now rolling a large ornamental ball before her— walks by him and says, "Knuckles, forget about your crazy holidays, and help me get this ball on top of that pole."
What Amy is referring to is a pole situated near the middle of the plaza. Knuckles walks over to it, grabs it and lifts it up, while Amy places the ball on its place. The echidna sets the pole through the ball and back on the stand while Amy attaches the ball on a rope via a small hook. The ball then climbs up the pole as Knuckles turns the crank.
"When it drops to the bottom, then it's exactly midnight, and the start of the new year," Amy explains.
Sticks suddenly runs up to Knuckles causing him to let go of the crank. "Don't trust her, Knuckles! I told you about the kumquats!" she hisses to him, causing me to roll my eyes.
Amy gasps seeing the ball falling and grabs it. She manages to stop it from falling but only for a second. As both her and the ball crash on the ground, the ball shatters into pieces.
"You really dropped the ball!" Tails jokes and laughs. I can't lie, as stupid as the joke is and as inappropriate as the situation is, it makes me chuckle. The others however aren't that fond of the joke as they give him annoyed stares. The fox immediately realizes his mistake and says, "Not cool?"
