Sparkles shine across the floor as I return to the shack. Pieces of confetti lie there, moonlight hitting them just right to make it look like a starry field I'm stepping on. I kick my shoes off by the nonexistent door, not wanting to bring any sand in.
Sonic is already in the hammock, lying on his back just off center. His eyes are locked with mine as I look at him.
"How was the ocean?" he asks.
I walk past him and the hammock, and to where my bag is just beside the armchair. I grab the hem of the dress and slide it off, letting it drop on the floor, and take my t-shirt, slipping into it and turning around. Sonic's eyes are on the ceiling, his fingers wrapped around each other over his stomach.
Despite all the times I've climbed into that hammock, I now find myself unable to do so. On all previous occasions, we were just friends. There wasn't anything between us. Nothing that was spoken of, at least. Maybe there was a tension in there, but it wasn't out. It just was. Now, we've talked about it. I can almost see it. It's a haze of darkness with a hint of orchid just lounging there like some lazy cat. The bastard even grins—
"Everything okay?"
The haze is gone and in the grin's place is a pair of emerald eyes.
I shake off the thought and give him a smile. "Yeah. I was just... thinking." I let silence fall into the shack, but only for a moment. "The ocean was calm. And at the same time the most intimidating thing I've ever seen."
His brow twitches the slightest bit and he blinks. A part of him wants to ask more about both answers I just gave him, but he's Sonic, and instead of asking me more he just lets it be. Instead, his next question is, "Aren't you coming to bed?"
"Sure," I reply curtly and move over to the hammock. I don't climb in right away, just stand at the edge. The haze still lingers, and it lazily stretches its paws before throwing a grin at me. I brush it off and get in the hammock. It swings lightly on its hinges, making a little squeaking sound. I lay down, and feel the fuzz against my bare arm and leg.
We stare at the ceiling, him and I. It's silent, apart from the distant ocean sounds, the hum of the forest, and that small squeak of the hammock as it peacefully rocks in the night. Almost feels as though the whole town has already gone sleeping, but no, the party is still going in the village. The shack is just the perfect distance away from all the bustle, here at the edge of the ocean.
"Do you think you'll fall asleep quickly?" Sonic asks.
I shake my head. "I don't feel sleepy. You?"
"Normally I'm asleep as soon as the party ends. Not this year though. This year feels... new."
I smile. In the corner of my eye I see him smiling too.
I've been here for two and a half months. It doesn't feel like that at all. Sometimes it feels like only a day has gone by and in other moments I'm certain it has been years. Time has always been an annoying little prick. When you need it to go fast it's slow, and vice versa. But here time feels almost dreamlike. Things that just happened can feel an eternity ago, and events from the far past tend to break through only to slip off as soon as I try to give them any more thought. Right now I remember the —I guess you could call them— main plot points. Anything deeper than that is just gone, like after waking from a dream. Even the party feels eons ago, despite us only just having left it moments ago.
"What are you thinking about?" Sonic asks.
I turn to look at him, those emerald eyes of his already waiting for me. Memory, I think, but I don't want to. Instead, I want to know, "What's your favorite color?"
